Here are some key events that led up to the indictment of the mayor:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4907614d\"><span>Nov. 2, 2023: The F.B.I. raids the home of the chief fund-raiser to Mayor Eric Adams.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Federal agents <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/02\/nyregion\/eric-adams-brianna-suggs-fbi-raid.html\" title=\"\">raided the Brooklyn home<\/a> of Brianna Suggs, a recent college graduate <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/06\/nyregion\/eric-adams-brianna-suggs-fundraiser-fbi.html\" title=\"\">who had been in charge<\/a> of Mr. Adams\u2019s fund-raising operation when he ran for mayor in 2021. Mr. Suggs was 23 years old when the mayor picked her for the job, and many Democratic officials who worked in fund-raising were shocked that he had chosen someone for the role with so little professional experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The agents seized three iPhones and two laptop computers from Ms. Suggs\u2019s home; they also took papers and other evidence, including something agents identified as a \u201cmanila folder labeled Eric Adams,\u201d as well as seven \u201ccontribution card binders\u201d and other materials, according to the search warrant documents.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-534594a8\"><span>Nov. 2, 2023: The F.B.I. raids the homes of an aide in the mayor\u2019s international affairs office and a former Turkish Airlines executive who served on his transition team.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Investigators also searched the New Jersey homes of Rana Abbasova, an aide in Mr. Adams\u2019s international affairs office, and Cenk \u00d6cal, a former Turkish Airlines executive who served on his transition team, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/16\/nyregion\/nyc-adams-turkey-raid-aide.html\" title=\"\">according to people familiar with the matter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Ms. Abbasova was the mayor\u2019s longtime liaison to the Turkish community when Mr. Adams was Brooklyn borough president. Mr. \u00d6cal was the general manager of the New York office of Turkish Airlines until early 2022.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-5181b7a5\"><span>Nov. 6, 2023: The F.B.I. seizes the mayor\u2019s phones and iPad.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">In early November, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/10\/nyregion\/adams-fbi-investigation-phones.html\" title=\"\">F.B.I. agents approached Mr. Adams and his security detail<\/a> after he had attended an event in Manhattan. The agents asked the security team to step aside before climbing into the mayor\u2019s S.U.V. with him and taking his devices, pursuant to a court-authorized warrant. The devices were returned to the mayor within a matter of days, according to two people familiar with the situation. Law enforcement investigators can make copies of data on seized devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">A lawyer for the mayor, Boyd Johnson, said at the time that Mr. Adams had not been accused of wrongdoing and had \u201cimmediately complied with the F.B.I.\u2019s request and provided them with electronic devices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Johnson also said that Mr. Adams had already \u201cproactively reported\u201d at least one instance of improper behavior.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-5326a433\"><span>Nov. 28, 2023: Adams announces that his chief fund-raiser is out.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Weeks after agents searched Ms. Suggs\u2019s home, Mayor Adams said during a weekly press briefing that she was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/28\/nyregion\/brianna-suggs-adams.html\" title=\"\">no longer managing his political fund-raising<\/a>. He declined to say why he had removed her from the position. Ms. Abbasova was also placed on leave after City Hall learned she had \u201cacted improperly,\u201d according to a spokesman for the mayor.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-64b08302\"><span>Feb. 5, 2024: A retired police inspector pleads guilty to funneling illegal funds to the mayor\u2019s campaign.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Dwayne Montgomery, a former police inspector, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/05\/nyregion\/eric-adams-nypd-illegal-donations.html\" title=\"\">pleaded guilty to misdemeanor conspiracy<\/a>, admitting to directing straw donors \u2014 people who make campaign contributions using someone else\u2019s money \u2014 to contribute to the mayor\u2019s campaign. Mr. Montgomery was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/07\/nyregion\/eric-mayor-adams-campaign-donation.html\" title=\"\">indicted in July 2023<\/a>, along with five others, including four construction executives and a bookkeeper. Mr. Montgomery agreed in his plea not to organize or host any fund-raisers or to solicit contributions for a campaign, for one year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The mayor was not implicated in the indictment nor accused of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-7e2ee834\"><span>Feb. 29, 2024: The F.B.I. searches the homes of the mayor\u2019s Asian affairs adviser, who was a prominent fund-raiser for his campaign.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Agents <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/29\/nyregion\/fbi-adams-greco-investigation-nyc.html\" title=\"\">searched two houses that belonged to Winnie Greco<\/a>, an aide who was a prominent fund-raiser and who had close ties to the Chinese community in New York City. She became the mayor\u2019s director of Asian affairs when he took office in 2022. Caban; the first deputy mayor, Sheena Wright; her partner, David C. Banks, the schools chancellor; the deputy mayor for public safety, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/27\/nyregion\/philip-banks-corruption-investigation.html\" title=\"\">Philip Banks III<\/a>; and a senior adviser to the mayor, Timothy Pearson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The seizures <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/05\/nyregion\/banks-sheena-fbi-search-nyc.html\" title=\"\">appeared to be separate<\/a> from the corruption investigation focused on the mayor and his campaign fund-raising, but the actions further destabilized his administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Terence Banks, a consultant who is the brother of both the schools chancellor and the deputy mayor of public safety, had his home searched and his phone seized. Agents seized the phones of his brothers because they believed they <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/10\/nyregion\/adams-banks-consultant-investigation.html\" title=\"\">might find evidence of bribery and other crimes<\/a>, including fraud and violations of the Travel Act, according to people with knowledge of the matter.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2f6328fa\"><span>Sept. 12, 2024: The police commissioner resigns.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Caban, the New York police commissioner, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/12\/nyregion\/edward-caban-resigns-nypd-commissioner.html\" title=\"\">resigned<\/a> at the request of City Hall, which asked him to step aside after federal investigators seized his phone. Media coverage about the investigations had \u201ccreated a distraction for the department,\u201d Mr. Caban said in an email to members of the Police Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Lawyers for Mr. Caban said in a statement that federal prosecutors had told them that he was not a target of the investigation and that he intended to fully cooperate with the government.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2e22badc\"><span>Sept. 15, 2024: The mayor\u2019s chief counsel resigns.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Lisa Zornberg <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/15\/nyregion\/lisa-zornberg-resigns-eric-adams-counsel.html\" title=\"\">resigned from her post<\/a> as the mayor\u2019s counsel and chief legal adviser. She had been one of the mayor\u2019s fiercest defenders, encouraging New Yorkers not to rush to judgment. She formerly worked as a senior Manhattan federal prosecutor in the office that is currently conducting three separate corruption investigations into the mayor and some of his senior aides.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-6d6acb6e\"><span>Sept. 16, 2024: Two former Fire Department chiefs are arrested on bribery charges.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Brian E. Cordasco, 49, and Anthony M. Saccavino, 59, ran the Department\u2019s Bureau of Fire Prevention until earlier this year. They were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/16\/nyregion\/nyc-fdny-bribery-arrest.html\" title=\"\">arrested and accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes<\/a> to speed up the fire-safety approval process for building projects across the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">There was no indication that the case is related to any of the federal corruption investigations swirling around the mayor, his campaign and some of his most senior aides.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-44d697f\"><span>Sept. 21, 2024: Federal agents search the home of the interim police commissioner.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Thomas G. According to two federal officials with knowledge of the matter, the materials were classified documents that had been in Mr. Donlon\u2019s possession for years.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-lhc8w e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-509a9c1c\"><span>Sept. 23, 2024: The city\u2019s health commissioner says he will resign.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Dr. Ashwin Vasan, who led New York City out of the coronavirus pandemic, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/23\/nyregion\/vasan-health-commissioner-resigns.html\" title=\"\">became the third top administration official<\/a> to resign in September amid the investigations. His decision will go into effect early next year. Dr. Vasan said he decided to step down because he wanted to spend more time with his family.
