{"id":107190,"date":"2024-09-26T09:34:59","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T02:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=107190"},"modified":"2024-09-26T09:34:59","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T02:34:59","slug":"these-15-factors-are-linked-to-early-dementia-risk-a-major-study-found-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=107190","title":{"rendered":"These 15 Factors Are Linked to Early Dementia Risk, a Major Study Found : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>While dementia is much more common in older adults, hundreds of thousands of people are diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/types-dementia\/young-onset-dementia\">young-onset dementia<\/a> (YOD) each year \u2013 and an extensive study sheds some considerable light on why.<\/p>\n<p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1533317514545825\">previous research<\/a> in this area has looked at genetics passed down through generations, but here, the team was able to identify 15 different lifestyle and health factors that are associated with YOD risk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the largest and most robust study of its kind ever conducted,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.exeter.ac.uk\/faculty-of-health-and-life-sciences\/risk-of-young-onset-dementia-could-be-reduced-through-targeting-health-and-lifestyle-factors\/\">said<\/a> epidemiologist David Llewellyn from the University of Exeter in the UK, when the results were published in December.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Excitingly, for the first time it reveals that we may be able to take action to reduce risk of this debilitating condition, through targeting a range of different factors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The research team analyzed data collected on 356,052 people aged under 65 in the UK. Low socioeconomic status, social isolation, <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/cant-hear-conversation-when-theres-noise-around-a-study-links-this-to-dementia-risk\">hearing impairment<\/a>, stroke, <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/diabetes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73018\" data-postid=\"139263\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">diabetes<\/a>, heart disease, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/depression\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73097\" data-postid=\"139263\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">depression<\/a> were all associated with a higher risk of YOD.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/what-are-vitamins-and-do-we-really-need-to-take-them\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73116\" data-postid=\"139263\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Vitamin<\/a> D deficiency and high levels of the C-reactive protein (produced by the liver in response to inflammation) also meant a higher risk, as did having two of the ApoE4 \u03b54 gene variants (a genetic scenario already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nrneurol.2012.263\">linked to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The researchers described the relationship between alcohol and YOD as &#8220;complex&#8221;. While <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/theres-one-easy-strategy-to-reduce-alcohol-intake-scientists-say\">alcohol abuse<\/a> led to an increased risk, moderate to heavy drinking correlated with a reduced risk \u2013 possibly because people in this second group are usually healthier in general (bear in mind that those who abstain from alcohol often do so on medical grounds).<\/p>\n<p>Higher levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/education-seems-to-protect-the-gut-not-just-make-you-smarter\">formal education<\/a> and lower physical frailty (measured through higher handgrip strength) were also associated with a lower YOD risk. This all helps to fill in some of the knowledge gaps around YOD.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We already knew from research on people who develop dementia at older age that there are a series of modifiable risk factors,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.exeter.ac.uk\/faculty-of-health-and-life-sciences\/risk-of-young-onset-dementia-could-be-reduced-through-targeting-health-and-lifestyle-factors\/\">said<\/a> neuroepidemiologist Sebastian K\u00f6hler from Maastricht University in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition to physical factors, mental health also plays an important role, including avoiding chronic stress, loneliness and depression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the results don&#8217;t prove dementia is caused by these factors, they help build a more detailed picture. As always in this kind of research, knowing more about the causes can help develop better treatments and <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/a-popular-new-weight-loss-drug-may-help-prevent-dementia\">preventative measures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these factors are modifiable, which offers more hope for those working to find ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/bodybuilding-supplement-shown-to-stave-off-dementia-in-mice\">beat dementia<\/a> rather than just manage it. Ultimately, dementia may be something we can reduce the risk of by living healthier lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Young-onset dementia has a very serious impact, because the people affected usually still have a job, children, and a busy life,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.exeter.ac.uk\/faculty-of-health-and-life-sciences\/risk-of-young-onset-dementia-could-be-reduced-through-targeting-health-and-lifestyle-factors\/\">said<\/a> neuroscientist Stevie Hendriks, from Maastricht University.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cause is often assumed to be genetic, but for many people we don&#8217;t actually know exactly what the cause is.
