After the project\u2019s nomination,  there were calls by the U.S.-based nonprofit Creative Community For Peace for the nomination to be rescinded, with a letter signed by the Hollywood notables including of Debra Messing, Sherry Lansing, Haim Saban and others accusing Owda of having ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a United States-designated terrorist group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s Bisan From Gaza and I\u2019m Still Alive,\u201d which had previously won a Peabody, uses social media to chronicle Owda\u2019s family\u2019s plight as they flee bombardment of their home in Gaza City. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn response, NATAS president\/CEO Adam Sharp said that Owda\u2019s nomination would not be rescinded, writing in a letter that \u201cIt\u2019s Bisan From Gaza and I\u2019m Still Alive\u201d was \u201creviewed by two successive panels of independent judges, including senior editorial leadership from each significant U.S. broadcast news network,\u201d and also noted that it had been recognized by the Peabody and the Edward R. Murrow Awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNATAS is aware of reports, cited in your letter and initially surfaced by a communications consultant in the region, that appear to show a then-teenaged Bisan Owda speaking at various PFLP-associated events between six and nine years ago,\u201d he added. \u201cNATAS has been unable to corroborate these reports, nor has it been able, to date, to surface any evidence of more contemporary or active involvement by Owda with the PFLP organization. Most critically, the content submitted for award consideration was consistent with competition rules and NATAS policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In accepting the award, senior executive producer John Lawrence said, \u201cThis award is testament to one woman, only with an iPhone, who survived almost a year of bombardment. Over 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza, including several of our Al Jazeera colleagues. Our bureau in the occupied West Bank was shut down at gunpoint just last week. We thank you, our journalistic community, for this recognition.. and we urge you in joining us in saying that journalist is not a crime.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLater, the Creative Community for Peace condemned the win: \u201cThe NATAS decision to honor Owda effectively celebrates PFLP propaganda and condones terrorism,\u201d executive director\u00a0Ari Ingel\u00a0said in a statement. \u201cInstead of recognizing one of the respectable journalistic pieces documenting the war in Gaza, they chose to applaud a political activist affiliated with the PFLP. There is clearly a significant blind spot within the journalistic community \u2013 if you support terrorism against Israelis, NATAS will happily recognize your content as award-worthy. This is a sad day for journalism. And a troubling omen for the future of the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Israel-Gaza war was the subject of several winners at Wednesday night\u2019s ceremony, including the outstanding breaking news coverage Emmy, which went to CNN for its reports on the conflict. CNN also won the outstanding continuing news coverage: short form Emmy for journalist Clarissa Ward\u2019s reports, while the outstanding continuing news coverage: short form Emmy went to CNN\u2019s \u201cThe Whole Story with Anderson Cooper\u201d and \u201cAnderson Cooper 360\u201d for its coverage of \u201cTerror in Israel.\u201d  ABC\u2019s ABC News Live won the outstanding live interview\u2014short form for its coverage of \u201cIsraeli Leader Speaks Out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOverall, CNN led the evening with 11 wins, including five for \u201cThe Whole Story with Anderson Cooper,\u201d while ABC and Nat Geo both landed five wins each (ABC News itself had eight, including three credited to Hulu). Nat Geo\u2019s \u201cTrafficked with Mariana van Zeller\u201d also earned five Emmys, tied with Cooper for the most on the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOther outlets receiving Emmys included ProPublica\/New Yorker (3), CBS (3), Univision (2) and Al Jazeera (2).
