I\u2019m doing this because I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the response to a question about compensation given last year during the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/9bUOOKJlB74\">Senate testimony<\/a> of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the billionaire boy king whose co-founders Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and John Schulman are now all gone; whose CTO Mira Murati just announced today that she, too, is leaving; who thinks that there\u2019s such a thing as a \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/sam-altman-replace-normal-people-ai\">median human<\/a>\u201c; who\u2019s been described by a former OpenAI board member as basically a <a href=\"https:\/\/bgr.com\/business\/ex-openai-board-members-have-no-regrets-and-still-think-sam-altman-needs-to-go\/\">toxic<\/a> bullshit artist; and who now himself <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-25\/openai-cto-mira-murati-says-she-will-leave-the-company?srnd=homepage-americas\">stands to make billions<\/a> from his first <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-remove-non-profit-control-give-sam-altman-equity-sources-say-2024-09-25\/\">equity stake<\/a> in OpenAI after it finishes transitioning from a nonprofit to a for-profit model.<\/p>\n<p>Away from the same nonprofit model, mind you, which supposedly proved that Altman is impartial and pure of heart in his leadership of an AI startup that\u2019s working toward a digital superintelligence so powerful that it wipes out white-collar work. The news probably surprised you \u2014 unless you were paying attention when OpenAI\u2019s CEO (who\u2019s always sounded to me like a platitude-spouting clone of Gary Vee) <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/OpenAI\/comments\/1axkqew\/sam_altman_ai_will_most_likely_lead_to_the_end_of\/\">said things like<\/a>: \u201cAI will most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime there will be great companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Setting aside the flurry of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/09\/25\/openais-chief-research-officer-has-left\/\">OpenAI headlines<\/a> today, once you get past the circus around Altman \u2014 like the idea that this non-technical Silicon Valley wunderkind who\u2019s consistently <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/technology\/comments\/18q4t9e\/sam_altmans_knack_for_dodging_bulletswith_a\/\">failed upward<\/a> is somehow the \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/sam-altman-artificial-intelligence-openai-profile.html\">Oppenheimer of our Age<\/a>\u201d \u2014 I\u2019m of the opinion that he\u2019s actually not all that hard to understand. What I see, though, is the most overhyped CEO of the century cosplaying as a visionary \u2014 specifically, a CEO and founder whose top leaders are all gone, whose company had an operating loss last year in the billions, and whose rivals like Meta are just giving similar software away. Oh, and the signature product of which is still somehow both amazing and incredibly dumb.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a question I asked ChatGPT just now:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"is-wp-image-block wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bgr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot-2024-09-25-at-5.11.27%E2%80%AFPM.png?w=768\" alt=\"\" class=\"is-wp-image-block wp-image-6234560\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Yep, seems like the product of a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/media\/openai-largest-vc-fundraising-round\/\">$150 billion company<\/a> to me.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll grant you that I sound like a total shitposter here, and as someone whose work has a greater than zero percent chance of being killed off by AI I\u2019m also about as far from impartial on this as one could get. So, ignore me if you want, but you would do well to listen to people like computer scientist Grady Booch, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Grady_Booch\/status\/1838310593885016368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in response to Altman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bgr.com\/tech\/i-am-so-freaking-tired-of-all-the-ai-hype-reaction-to-sam-altmans-latest-bluster\/\">latest bluster<\/a> on X\/Twitter: \u201cI am so freaking tired of all the AI hype: it has no basis in reality and serves only to inflate valuations, inflame the public, (garner) headlines, and distract from the real work going on in computing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some people are going even more hardcore than that, like Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel who blasted Altman as a \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ari-emanuel-endeavor-ceo-calls-openai-sam-altman-con-man-2024-6\">con man<\/a>\u201d a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p>For myself, I\u2019ll simply say that Altman being at the vanguard of all this makes me question whether any of it really is to our collective benefit.
