Do you still go for those plans and borrow?\u201d MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle asked Harris about her handout-heavy agenda.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, but we\u2019re going to have to raise corporate taxes,\u201d the Democratic nominee responded, without explaining how she intends to do that without congressional support.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to make sure that the biggest corporations and billionaires pay their fair share,\u201d Harris continued. \u201cThat\u2019s just it. It\u2019s about paying their fair share.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Harris dodged answering multiple questions during her MSNBC interview Wednesday. <span class=\"credit\">MSNBC\/X<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Ruhle asked Harris how she would ensure that businesses hit with corporate tax hikes don\u2019t leave the US, the vice president claimed that CEOs are supportive of her plan to raise the corporate rate from 21% to 28%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWell, listen, I work with a lot of CEOs,\u201d Harris said. \u201cI have spent a lot of time with CEOs. And I\u2019m going to tell you that the business leaders who are actually part of the engine of America\u2019s economy agree that people should pay their fair share.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also agree that when we look at a plan such as mine \u2014 that is about investing in the middle class, investing in new industries, investing and bringing down costs, investing in entrepreneurs like small businesses \u2014 that the overall economy is stronger and everyone benefits,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019 proposed economic agenda, which includes measures to dole out $25,000 to first-time homebuyers and give up to $6,000 in tax breaks to families who have a child in their first year of life, comes with an estimated price tag of $1.7 trillion, according to an analysis from the\u00a0Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Harris\u2019 interview with Stephanie Ruhle was her first one-on-one sitdown with a major news network since replacing President Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket. <span class=\"credit\">MSNBC\/X<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Harris later talked past a leading question from Ruhle about how she would address <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/15\/us-news\/republicans-economist-slam-harris-plan-to-lower-food-prices-economic-lunacy\/\">price gouging<\/a> without implementing price controls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, just to be very frank, I am never going to apologize for going after companies and corporations that take advantage of the desperation of the American people,\u201d the vice president responded, calling her proposed federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries \u201cpart of a much more comprehensive plan on what we can do to bring down the cost of living.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Harris also dodged questions regarding lifting the state and local tax deductions for federal taxpayers and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters\u2019 refusal to endorse her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Harris refused to say how she would raise taxes as president without congressional support. <span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She resorted to talking points about the need to fix the nation\u2019s \u201cbroken immigration system\u201d and the failed Senate border bill when asked about what she would do to help communities \u201cat capacity\u201d from taking in migrants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a comprehensive plan that includes what we need to do to fortify not only our border, but deal with the fact that we also need to create pathways for people to earn citizenship,\u201d she said, providing no answer for how she would deal with cities burdened by the influx of migrants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The vice president also served up several <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/20\/us-news\/kamala-harris-ripped-for-latest-word-salad\/\">word salads<\/a> during her MSNBC sitdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d \u2014 frankly, I\u2019m going to \u2014 and I say this in all sincerity \u2013 he\u2019s just not very serious about how he thinks about some of these issues,\u201d\u00a0 Harris said when asked about former President Donald Trump\u2019s plan to impose sweeping tariffs on foreign goods. \u201cAnd one must be serious and have a plan \u2014 and a real plan that\u2019s not just about some talking point ending in an exclamation at a political rally, but actually putting the thought into what will be the return on the investment? What will be the economic impact on everyday people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At one point in the interview, Harris leaned on the word \u201cholistically\u201d to get through an answer about bringing down housing costs.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the work is going to be through what we do in terms of giving benefits and assistance to state and local governments, around transit dollars, and looking holistically at the connection between that and housing and looking holistically at the incentives we in the federal government can create for local and state governments to actually engage in planning and holistic manner,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She also gave a repetitive response when Ruhle asked her to respond to Americans who don\u2019t support her policy proposals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have the dreams and the ambitions and the aspirations of what I believe you do, you\u2019re in my plan,\u201d she said. \u201cYou know, I have to tell you I really love and I\u2019m so energized by what I know to be the spirit and character of the American people.
