But it claimed to be independent. It hired American journalists, and featured some big names like former CNN host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/19\/business\/media\/moscow-joins-the-partisan-media-landscape-with-familiar-american-faces.html\">Larry King<\/a>. The channel\u2019s aesthetic was sleek, modern, and cable news-like. influencers<\/a>, over which the Justice Department recently indicted two RT employees.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to Blinken\u2019s accusation, an RT statement joked that the organization has been \u201cbroadcasting straight out of the KGB headquarters all this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"edTag\">From the war in Georgia to Occupy Wall Street<\/h2>\n<p>RT originally launched in 2005 as Russia Russia Today presented itself as a counterpoint to coverage on CNN and other international outlets that its editor-in-chief said was biased towards the Georgians.<\/p>\n<p>In the following years, the network shortened its name to RT, launched channels in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/09\/business\/russia-propaganda-spanish-social-media.html\">Arabic and Spanish<\/a>, and began broadcasting from Washington, DC, under the name RT America. It also built a big <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2013\/09\/how-the-rt-network-built-a-us-audience.html\">online presence<\/a> on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and its own website.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>As RT evolved, one constant was its approach as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/feature\/what_is_russia_today.php\">provocative alternative<\/a> to Western media, in a \u201cjust asking questions\u201d mode seemingly aimed at younger, left-leaning Americans.<\/p>\n<p>It adopted the slogan \u201cQuestion More\u201d and in 2010 launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2009\/dec\/18\/russia-today-propaganda-ad-blitz\">controversial advertising campaign<\/a> with the phrase. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/archive\/russia-today-courts-viewers-with-controversy\">One ad<\/a> asked whether then President Barack Obama or Iran\u2019s President Mahmud Ahmadinejad posed \u201cthe greater nuclear threat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That contrarian approach got RT noticed, including for its coverage of the anti-wealth inequality Occupy Wall Street movement of the early 2010s.<\/p>\n<p>But RT\u2019s legitimate reporting was mixed with sensationalism, seizing on stories of grievance and chaos in the U.S. \u201cThey also engage in ragebait\u2026in disaster footage and kind of the shock and awe value,\u201d Jankowicz said. Russia has long deflected scrutiny of issues like its own human rights violations by highlighting the U.S.\u2019s own social problems.<\/p>\n<p>RT has also trafficked in outright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2014\/jul\/30\/peter-lavelle\/rts-peter-lavelle-says-he-doesnt-allow-conspiracy-\/\">conspiracism<\/a>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/fighting-hate\/intelligence-report\/2010\/russian-tv-channel-pushes-patriot-conspiracy-theories\">false claim<\/a> that President Barack Obama wasn\u2019t born in the US to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130501141951\/http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/911-attack-job\/\">bogus theories<\/a> about the September 11th attacks.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"edTag\">Scrutiny increases as views of Russia soured<\/h2>\n<p>Jankowicz says RT\u2019s image began to shift when Russia illegally annexed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/12\/1080205477\/history-ukraine-russia\">Crimea<\/a> in 2014. American RT anchor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2014\/03\/06\/286807718\/russian-tv-host-quits-over-network-whitewash-of-crimea\">Liz Wahl quit on air<\/a>, saying \u201cI cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe masks were off. It was clear that RT was just shilling for the Russian point of view,\u201d Jankowicz said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/10\/26\/560199026\/twitter-ends-russian-state-media-advertisements-citing-2016-interference-efforts\">Scrutiny<\/a> of Russian state media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/06\/09\/532196946\/russia-needs-to-counter-mainstream-media-head-of-rt-network-says\">escalated<\/a> with the revelations that the Kremlin sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/08\/18\/903512647\/senate-report-former-trump-aide-paul-manafort-shared-campaign-info-with-russia\">tip the 2016 presidential election<\/a> to Donald Trump. U.S. intelligence officials accused RT of being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2017-rt-media\/\">involved<\/a> in election meddling, and RT America was forced to register with the Justice Department as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/11\/14\/564045159\/rt-america-firm-registers-as-foreign-agent-in-u-s-russia-looks-to-retaliate\">foreign agent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2019\/01\/removing-cib-from-russia\/\">Facebook took down<\/a> hundreds of pages posing as independent European news sites that were actually run by employees of an RT sister brand called Sputnik.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A month later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/15\/tech\/russia-facebook-viral-videos\/index.html\">CNN reported<\/a> that Maffick Media, which made online videos targeting left-leaning millennials, was funded by an RT subsidiary \u2013 without any disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>The fake news sites in particular were a precursor to what RT is accused of doing today, said Belogolova, who was leading Facebook\u2019s Russia investigations at the time. \u201cIt&#8217;s not a totally novel thing for them to sort of blur the lines between covert and overt,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"edTag\">After the invasion of Ukraine, RT adopts \u2018guerrilla\u2019 tactics<\/h2>\n<p>Then came Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Many US cable companies dropped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/12\/business\/rt-america-russian-tv.html\">RT America<\/a>, and the U.S. channel shut down. RT was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/28\/1083633239\/facebook-and-tiktok-block-russian-state-media-in-europe\">banned<\/a> across much of Europe, and was blocked globally on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/01\/1083824030\/techs-crackdown-on-russian-propaganda-is-a-geopolitical-high-wire-act\">YouTube<\/a>, where it had racked up billions of views.<\/p>\n<p>So, the network looked for ways to keep pushing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/02\/28\/1159712623\/how-russia-is-losing-and-winning-the-information-war-in-ukraine\">pro-Russia, anti-Ukraine
