The researchers published their findings Sept. 26. in the journal <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202450584\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202450584\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We made so many discoveries, we have changed the view of our Galaxy forever,&#8221; project lead and study co-author <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iau.org\/administration\/membership\/individual\/1217\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.iau.org\/administration\/membership\/individual\/1217\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Dante Minniti<\/u><\/a>, an astrophysicist at Universidad Andr\u00e9s Bello in Chile, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1059047?\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1059047?\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>said in a statement<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/10-discoveries-that-prove-einstein-was-right-about-the-universe-and-1-that-proves-him-wrong\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/10-discoveries-that-prove-einstein-was-right-about-the-universe-and-1-that-proves-him-wrong\"><u><strong>10 discoveries that prove Einstein was right about the universe \u2014 and 1 that proves him wrong<\/strong><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To make the map, the astronomers used the VISTA InfraRed CAMera (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/paranal-observatory\/surveytelescopes\/vista\/camera\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/paranal-observatory\/surveytelescopes\/vista\/camera\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">VIRCAM<\/a>), an infrared camera which peered through the dust and gas permeating the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/milky-way\"><u>Milky Way<\/u><\/a> to discover radiation from previously unnoticed sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This enabled the telescope to pick up the infrared glow from &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/cosmology\/why-do-some-stars-fail-to-ignite\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/cosmology\/why-do-some-stars-fail-to-ignite\"><u>failed stars<\/u><\/a>&#8221; \u2014 objects that straddle the line between giant planets and small stars, also known as brown dwarfs \u2014 and gravitationally unbound <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/james-webb-telescope-spots-6-enormous-rogue-planets-tumbling-through-space-without-a-star\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/james-webb-telescope-spots-6-enormous-rogue-planets-tumbling-through-space-without-a-star\"><u>rogue planets<\/u><\/a> on hundreds of nights between 2010 and 2023.
