Rappaport, National Hurricane Center)<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"><strong> (FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Rappaport found that only 8% of hurricane- or tropical-storm-related fatalities were from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/wind-extreme-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind<\/a>, while any embedded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/tornadoes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tornadoes<\/a> produced by the storm were blamed for another 3% of the deaths.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The data from the 50-year period of study of 650 to 700 Atlantic tropical cyclones showed that two to three per year turned deadly in the U.S. Only three of the 10 deadliest tropical cyclones between 1963-2012 were major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher) when making landfall, and six of those 10 were just tropical storms or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/tropical-cyclone-one-explainer-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Category 1 hurricanes<\/a> when they came ashore, so it\u2019s very important to take every tropical storm seriously, no matter its hurricane category and rating on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/saffir-simpson-hurricane-wind-scale-hurricane-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/saffir-simpson-hurricane-wind-scale-hurricane-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HOW ARE HURRICANES RATED? THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE WIND SCALE EXPLAINED<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Storm surge poses the greatest threat to human life<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Rappaport\u2019s study concluded that 49% \u2013 nearly half \u2013 of all fatalities from U.S. hurricanes and tropical storms were blamed on storm-surge flooding.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NOAA\u2019s National Ocean Service defines storm surge as the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/stormsurge-stormtide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abnormal rise in water levels during a storm<\/a> surge, measured as the height of the water above the normal predicted astronomical tide.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;The surge is caused primarily by a <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/stormsurge-stormtide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">storm\u2019s winds pushing water onshore<\/a>,&#8221; the NOS said. &#8220;The amplitude of the storm surge at any given location depends on the orientation of the coastline with the storm track; the intensity, size and speed of the storm; and the local bathymetry.&#8221; (Bathymetry is basically the underwater equivalent of topography.)<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/difference-between-tropical-depression-tropical-storm-hurricane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TROPICAL DEPRESSION VS. TROPICAL STORM VS. HURRICANE: WHAT&#8217;S THE DIFFERENCE?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/data\/tcr\/AL122005_Katrina.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHC\u2019s final report<\/a> on Hurricane Katrina from 2005 estimated a 24- to 28-foot storm surge along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/mississippi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mississippi<\/a> ocean coast across a swath about 20 miles wide, centered around St. Louis Bay, while a 15- to 19-foot surge was estimated in eastern parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/louisiana\/new-orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Orleans<\/a> and St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Katrina was responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/data\/tcr\/AL122005_Katrina.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,833 fatalities<\/a>, of which 1,577 were in Louisiana alone, according to the NHC. If you do, be sure to follow all evacuation orders from your local emergency managers because it may end up saving your life.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/how-to-prepare-for-an-evacuation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN EVACUATION<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Rainfall flooding is the most frequent cause of death<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Drowning from excessive rainfall was the most frequent cause of death from U.S. hurricanes and tropical storms in the 50-year Rappaport study. Rappaport, National Hurricane Center)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Rappaport noted that tropical cyclone rainfall events often take place far from the storm\u2019s center of circulation, sometimes persisting long after the storm has significantly weakened or even dissipated as a tropical cyclone.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Additionally, historic flooding can result if a storm moves very slowly or stalls over the same area for a prolonged period of time. This can occur even if it\u2019s only a tropical depression or tropical storm since a storm\u2019s rainfall potential is dictated only by its forward speed, not its maximum winds.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In 2018, Hurricane Florence set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/data\/tcr\/AL062018_Florence.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new tropical cyclone rainfall record<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina<\/a> with 35.93 inches and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/south-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Carolina<\/a> with 23.63 inches because of its extremely sluggish forward movement, resulting in disastrous flooding in both states. Florence was responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/data\/tcr\/AL062018_Florence.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22 direct deaths in the U.S.<\/a>, of which 17 were caused by freshwater flooding (four from wind and one from a tornado associated with the storm).<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/hurricane-harvey-by-the-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HURRICANE HARVEY: BY THE NUMBERS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/hurricane-harvey-by-the-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hurricane Harvey<\/a> in 2017 is another recent example of this.
