The 60-year-old spaceman has now spent 1,111 non-consecutive days in orbit, which is longer than any other astronaut in history \u2014 and will likely remain unbeaten for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Kononenko, who turned 60 in June, returned to Earth inside Russia&#8217;s Soyuz MS-25 spacecraft on Monday (Sept. 23), alongside fellow cosmonaut Nikolai Chub and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\">NASA<\/a> astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson, according to Live Science&#8217;s sister site <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/soyuz-ms-25-landing-record-days-space\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/soyuz-ms-25-landing-record-days-space\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Space.com<\/u><\/a>. The trio touched down in the steppe of Kazakhstan around 3.5 hours after undocking from the ISS.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>The two cosmonauts, or Russian astronauts, had spent a record-breaking 374 continuous days onboard the space station, narrowly beating NASA astronaut Frank Rubio who inadvertently <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/record-breaking-astronaut-frank-rubio-finally-returns-to-earth-after-accidentally-spending-371-days-in-space\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/record-breaking-astronaut-frank-rubio-finally-returns-to-earth-after-accidentally-spending-371-days-in-space\"><u>completed a 371-day stay on the ISS last year<\/u><\/a> after his return craft was damaged. Dyson, meanwhile, returned after spending 184 days in space.<\/p>\n<p>Kononeko first <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/russian-cosmonaut-oleg-kononeko-breaks-record-for-longest-time-spent-in-space-and-he-still-has-6-months-to-go\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/russian-cosmonaut-oleg-kononeko-breaks-record-for-longest-time-spent-in-space-and-he-still-has-6-months-to-go\"><u>broke the record for most cumulative days in space<\/u><\/a> in February, when he surpassed the 878-day haul of compatriot Gennady Padalka, who set the record in 2015. Kononeko has flown on five different missions to the ISS since 2008, which is how the spaceflight veteran racked up his impressive total.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to all my crewmates for your friendship. It has been a great time and pleasure to work and spend time together here as a big family on board the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\">International Space Station<\/a>,&#8221; NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/boeing-starliner-astronauts-will-spend-at-least-240-days-in-space-is-that-a-new-record\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/boeing-starliner-astronauts-will-spend-at-least-240-days-in-space-is-that-a-new-record\"><u>have been stranded in space<\/u><\/a> as a result, and the latter has just <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/suni-williams-takes-command-of-iss-exp-71\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/suni-williams-takes-command-of-iss-exp-71\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>taken over command of the ISS from Kononenko<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether or not Kononenko will make any more trips into space.
