The club was founded, as Newton Heath, in 1878, before changing its name to Manchester United in 1902.<\/p>\n<p>That defined goal puts into context the work required on the team, with United currently 11th in the Premier League after two wins, one draw and two defeats. United also drew their opening game in the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"37\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/europa-league\/\">Europa League<\/a> to FC Twente, the lowest-ranked side they will face at Old Trafford in the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Berrada also spoke about the women\u2019s team winning their first title by that year, in equal prominence. He tried to strike an aspirational tone, accepting it would take lots of hard work, rather than come across bullish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5794848\/2024\/09\/25\/erik-ten-hag-man-utd-mentality-fc-twente\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/09\/25181418\/GettyImages-2174477118-scaled-e1727302477705-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">Ten Hag questions Man Utd mentality: &#8216;We were too easy going&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Berrada\u2019s bold statements were received by an audience of staffers in a mixed mood in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5611715\/2024\/07\/03\/manchester-united-job-cuts\/\">the wake of the the job cuts that are seeing the 1,000-strong workforce reduced by a quarter.<\/a> People who have been at the club for several years have departed, prompting feelings of upset and despondency, while others are energised at the prospect of the club becoming more driven by sporting objectives.<\/p>\n<p>Ratcliffe\u2019s arrival triggered the redundancies as a means of saving money the club says, but his main motivation is on United winning major silverware again. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5290146\/2024\/02\/21\/jim-ratcliffe-manchester-united-transcript\/\">In his first round of media interviews in February<\/a> after securing his 27.7 per cent investment he brought up the 150-year anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a 10-year plan. The fans would run out of patience if it was a 10-year plan. But it\u2019s certainly a three-year plan to get there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo think that we\u2019re going to be playing football as good as <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"654\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/team\/manchester-city\/\">Manchester City<\/a> played against Real Madrid last season by next year is not sensible. And if we give people false expectations, then they will get disappointed. Because it\u2019s not easy to turn Manchester United into the world\u2019s best football team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate target for Manchester United \u2014 and it\u2019s always going to be thus, really \u2014 is that we should be challenging for the Premier League and challenging for the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/champions-league\/\">Champions League<\/a>. It\u2019s one of the biggest clubs in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"653\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/team\/liverpool\/\">Liverpool<\/a> game earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5734709\/2024\/09\/01\/manchester-united-liverpool-casemiro\/\">which United lost 3-0,<\/a> Berrada and Dan Ashworth, the club\u2019s newly-appointed sporting director, addressed the media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cErik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together in this transfer window,\u201d Berrada said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team. Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we\u2019re fully backing him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before United\u2019s return to Premier League action against <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"656\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/team\/tottenham-hotspur\/\">Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> on Sunday, Ten Hag said: \u201cWe are working and progressing. We have to sign players but we made a choice to sign very young players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year (Rasmus) Hojlund, this year (Joshua) Zirkzee, Leny Yoro. We believe in them, this moment and also for the future, and we have to build them.
