{"id":107549,"date":"2024-09-27T14:53:55","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T07:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=107549"},"modified":"2024-09-27T14:53:55","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T07:53:55","slug":"boars-head-plants-nationwide-now-part-of-law-enforcement-investigation-usda-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=107549","title":{"rendered":"Boar&#8217;s Head plants nationwide now part of law enforcement investigation, USDA says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Boar&#8217;s Head processing plants nationwide are now part of an ongoing law enforcement investigation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture disclosed Thursday, in the wake of a deadly outbreak blamed on some of the company&#8217;s now-recalled deli meats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At least 59 hospitalizations and 10 deaths have been linked to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/listeria\/outbreaks\/delimeats-7-24.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">listeria strain<\/a> traced back to Boar&#8217;s Head products distributed from a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/boars-head-plant-closure-listeria-outbreak-liverwurst\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">now-shuttered<\/a><\/span> plant the company ran in Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We take very seriously matters of public health and corporate accountability, and an investigation into this matter remains underway and ongoing,&#8221; a spokesperson for the USDA&#8217;s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a statement.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>That Boar&#8217;s Head plant in Virginia <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bugs-mold-mildew-inspection-boars-head-plant-listeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">had been written up dozens of times<\/a><\/span> by inspectors over violations, CBS News first reported in August, based on records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. Violations flagged at the plant by agriculture officials included mold and insects found throughout the site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>FSIS disclosed the existence of the probe in a letter on Thursday, when it denied a CBS News request for records on Boar&#8217;s Head&#8217;s other plants in Michigan, Arkansas and Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>Since the records are being &#8220;compiled for law enforcement purposes,&#8221; public records officials for FSIS said releasing them &#8220;could hinder the government&#8217;s ability to further control and shape the investigation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the ongoing investigation related to this matter, FSIS is withholding 93 pages in full,&#8221; they wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The disclosure comes the same day as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blumenthal.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press\/release\/blumenthal-and-delauro-refer-boars-head-to-doj-for-responsibility-in-listeria-outbreak-call-on-usda-to-bolster-oversight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">letter<\/a> by Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, both Connecticut Democrats, to the USDA and the Department of Justice, urging them to consider criminal charges against the company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The time for action is long overdue, and we urge your agencies to work together to seek immediate justice for impacted consumers and to prevent this from happening again,&#8221; they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether the law enforcement probe is a criminal or civil investigation. An FSIS spokesperson said they were limited in the details they could share about an active investigation.<\/p>\n<p>A Boar&#8217;s Head spokesperson declined to comment, saying the company does not comment on legal matters.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to an investigation of &#8220;Boar&#8217;s Head establishments across the country,&#8221; the FSIS statement said the agency is also doing a &#8220;top-to-bottom review&#8221; to look for lessons learned for public health in the wake of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are also placing particular focus on state inspection models, including where policy changes are needed to prevent oversight gaps,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The USDA had outsourced the majority of its duties at the Boar&#8217;s Head plant in Virginia to state inspectors, CBS News previously reported, through a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/policy\/fsis-directives\/5720.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">decades-old agreement<\/a> drawn up to handle federal oversight at rural facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite the closure, FSIS&#8217; investigation into factors that contributed to this outbreak, including but not limited to an in-depth look at other Boar&#8217;s Head facilities, will continue in the interest of best protecting public health,&#8221; said the spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n<p><h3 class=\"component__title\">More from CBS News<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p><!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/alexander-tin\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Alexander Tin<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Alexander Tin is a digital reporter for CBS News based in the Washington, D.C. bureau.
