The images were combined to form the record-breaking map, which covers an area of the sky equivalent to 8,600 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39238-full-moon-names.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39238-full-moon-names.html\">full moons<\/a> (as seen from Earth). The stars of Messier 22 are thought to be leftovers from the early universe. It is host to at least two stellar-mass <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15421-black-holes-facts-formation-discovery-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15421-black-holes-facts-formation-discovery-sdcmp.html\">black holes<\/a> and six free-floating &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rogue-planets-guide\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rogue-planets-guide\">rogue planets<\/a>,&#8221; that aren&#8217;t orbiting parent stars.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Messier 22 is one of only four globular clusters that have been found to contain a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7138-long-sought-remnants-massive-stars.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7138-long-sought-remnants-massive-stars.html\">planetary nebula<\/a>. Despite the name, these have nothing to do with planets; they are actually the wreckage of massive stars that have exploded in tremendous <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\">supernova explosions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the 420 nights that VISTA conducted the VVV and VVVX surveys, the telescope revised the same patch of sky repeatedly. This allowed scientists to precisely determine the positions of the objects above (and many others) and track how they move throughout the sky as well as how their brightnesses change over time. The result is a peek through the dust that often obscures our view of our own galaxy, and a revolutionary three-dimensional map of the Milky Way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The project was a monumental effort, made possible because a great team surrounded us,&#8221; team leader Roberto Saito, an astrophysicist at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Brazil, said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s research was published in the journal <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/component\/article?access=doi&amp;doi=10.1051\/0004-6361\/202450584\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/component\/article?access=doi&amp;doi=10.1051\/0004-6361\/202450584\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics<\/a>.
