The mayor cannot have contact with anyone involved in the allegations in the indictment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ky5bba0008356mhw4o9h6y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aside from that, the mayor can still maintain routine business contacts and communicate with family members. The judge also allowed Adams to keep his passport.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ky5one000b356mxpwo62gn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adams\u2019 apperance in court as a defendant is a stark contrast from his work fighting crime as an NYPD captain \u2013 a job he often touted during his political career.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kxmn3300003b5v9v3eq5nh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mayor, a Democrat elected in 2021, has denied wrongdoing and said he doesn\u2019t plan to resign. \u201cI look forward to defending myself and defending the people of this city as I\u2019ve done throughout my entire professional career,\u201d Adams said Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kptw0e000y356mivq1cyei@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Between 2016 and October 2023, Adams sought and accepted benefits such as free luxury travel and campaign donations from foreign businessmen, according to a 57-page, 15,000-word indictment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq26s30019356mgwjymc0c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adams allegedly committed 23 different \u201covert acts,\u201d which include accepting free flights and hotel rooms and coordinating straw donations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq26s3001a356mwr4cqrhw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prosecutors say the foreign nationals were able to sidestep federal law and conceal their campaign donations through these \u201cstraw donors\u201d \u2013 US-based donors who falsely claimed they were contributing their own money.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq26s3001c356m83pss3ji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2017, Adams allegedly accepted free business class tickets for three roundtrip international flights and a heavily discounted stay at a suite in the St. Regis Istanbul. The trip was worth over $41,000, and Adams did not disclose it, the indictment alleges.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq26s3001d356mwb9439xu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adams allegedly accepted over $123,000 worth of luxury travel benefits between 2016 and 2021, without disclosing any of it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq26s3001e356mxokp0tt4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By 2018, the mayor allegedly \u201cnot only accepted, but sought illegal campaign contributions to his 2021 mayoral campaign, as well as other things of value, from foreign nationals.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq26s3001f356msxdnnz0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By January 2022, he had agreed to accept contributions of foreign money to his 2025 campaign, the <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25175496\/indictment-against-nyc-mayor-eric-adams.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indictment alleges<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kr61ig0000356mzqjpquek@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New York Gov. Kathy Hochul\u2019s team is telling allies and other stakeholders that she is now seriously considering the possibility of removing Adams\u00a0from office \u2013 a power she has under state law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282g0006356m1wkfo92v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A source briefed on the governor\u2019s thinking told CNN that Hochul has increasingly come to view the\u00a0Adams\u00a0situation as \u201cuntenable.\u201d But no decision has been announced.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h0009356mks9u9xnv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before Adams\u2019 indictment was unsealed, Hochul reportedly hadn\u2019t considered removing the mayor. But after reviewing the indictment, the governor suggested in a statement late Thursday that she was leaving her options open.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h000a356m3td4hi1e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI expect the Mayor to take the next few days to review the situation and find an appropriate path forward to ensure the people of New York City are being well-served by their leaders,\u201d Hochul said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h000c356mqhk5rbc6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lawyers in the governor\u2019s office have started to look over the legal language of the removal authority, another source familiar with the situation told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h000d356mnh4xyk1q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though many local lawmakers have called for\u00a0Adams\u00a0to resign, some high profile New York Democrats in Congress have been less vocal. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer both stopped short of calling for\u00a0Adams\u00a0to step down in their most recent remarks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h000e356mjzdf99mx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNo one is above the law, including the Mayor of New York City,\u201d Schumer said in a written statement Thursday. \u201cThe charges are serious, and the legal process should now play out speedily and fairly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h000f356ma4bdu27r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Jeffries could come under pressure from New York House candidates concerned the\u00a0Adams\u00a0scandal might hurt their prospects for election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h000g356mrk9roejl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adams is \u201centitled to the presumption of innocence,\u201d Jeffries said, and \u201ca jury of the Mayor\u2019s peers will now evaluate the charges in the indictment and ultimately render a determination.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ks282h000h356m1hm3u042@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hochul and\u00a0Adams\u00a0have had a good working relationship. Both of them have partnered on public safety issues \u2013 including crime on the city\u2019s subways, which are controlled by the state. The relationship is a significant improvement from years past, when former New York City mayors and governors have openly feuded over city policies and funding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ktk70x0019356mmg7mgcxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Longtime political activist the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/03\/22\/us\/al-sharpton-fast-facts\/index.html\">Rev. Al Sharpton<\/a> is convening the city\u2019s Black leaders this weekend, according to a person familiar with the planning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ku1ure001w356m8rp3se4y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sharpton is aware of the many \u201ccomplexities\u201d of the Adams situation and wants to examine all the possibilities, the source said. Sharpton is also concerned about the impact the ordeal will have on the city, the source added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ktug85001s356mxx2swoou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Community representatives and lawmakers, including Jeffries, are expected to attend the meeting \u2013 though Jeffries\u2019 attendance has not been confirmed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ku28v8001z356m7gn8ehr1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jeffries and Adams have a lot in common, including their humble backgrounds and bare-knuckle campaign styles. But while sources say the two New Yorkers have mutual respect for each other, the pair have never been close.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ktryy8001n356mfhr0iftr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The congressman realizes that calling for the mayor\u2019s resignation would \u201cimply a sense of guilt\u201d \u2013 and that\u2019s not something he would do or take lightly, according to a person familiar with Jeffries\u2019 thinking.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq1qa10017356mb3rxq4s5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For now, the mayor can\u2019t go to work at city hall. Adams remains under arrest Friday morning and cannot leave the courthouse until the magistrate makes a decision about next steps.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ku8jrv0025356mp1btpxue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After his arraignment Friday, Adams\u2019 next court appearance before a district judge is scheduled for Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kujfn0002b356mba6ltc1n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If convicted on all charges, Adams could face up to 45 years in prison, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/new-york-city-mayor-eric-adams-charged-bribery-and-campaign-finance-offenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Attorney\u2019s Office<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq6wx6001n356myge9qheo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The most serious charge is wire fraud, which comes with a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. That charge stems from allegations that Adams stole from New York City\u2019s matching funds program.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqloou00013b5vozj5q8dd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The program is designed \u201cto give New Yorkers a greater voice in elections,\u201d and matches donations from city residents with public funds. But it prohibits the use of straw donations, according to the indictment. The program requires candidates to certify compliance with campaign finance regulations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq6wx6001o356mw5u8ypna@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The indictment alleges Adams not only received illegal campaign contributions, but he then allegedly used eight of those improper donations to apply for matching funds and obtained as much as $2,000 for each illegal contribution. His campaign then falsely certified compliance, the indictment states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq6r8y001l356m4uzsgujf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The indictment does not total the amount of matching public funds Adams allegedly received directly from the eight illegal straw donations. Adams\u2019 2021 mayoral campaign ultimately received more than $10 million in public funds from the city\u2019s matching funds program, according to the indictment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq8lii001t356m3m78e4x0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bribery is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. That charge relates to the alleged quid-pro-quo of receiving luxury travel benefits from a Turkish official in exchange for pushing the approval of the Turkish House \u2013 a center for Turkish diplomatic missions in New York City, the indictment states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kq8lii001u356m4trpwmbd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two counts of soliciting campaign contributions from foreign nationals are each punishable by up to 5 years in prison. One of the charges is based on allegations in 2021 and the other is based on allegations in 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ky9c7t000f356mk2emnrmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Finally, there is a conspiracy charge, which is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
