{"id":107811,"date":"2024-09-28T06:02:51","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T23:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=107811"},"modified":"2024-09-28T06:02:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T23:02:51","slug":"poverty-in-argentina-soars-to-over-50-as-mileis-austerity-measures-hit-hard-argentina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=107811","title":{"rendered":"Poverty in Argentina soars to over 50% as Milei\u2019s austerity measures hit hard | Argentina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Argentina\u2019s poverty rate has soared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/mileis-austerity-seen-pushing-half-argentina-into-poverty-2024-09-26\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">to almost 53%<\/a> in the first six months of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/javier-milei\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Javier Milei<\/a>\u2019s presidency, offering the first hard evidence of how the far-right libertarian\u2019s tough austerity measures are hitting the population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The new poverty rate, reported by the government\u2019s statistics agency on Thursday, is the highest level for two decades, when the country reeled from a catastrophic economic crisis, and means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ccaeb4f5-6818-4aec-8112-cbf3639ad557\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">3.4 million Argentinians<\/a> have been pushed into poverty this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Since taking office in December, the self-described \u201canarcho-capitalist\u201d \u2013 who campaigned with a chainsaw in hand to symbolise the cuts he would make \u2013 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jun\/13\/argentina-violence-protests-president-milei-buenos-aires-austerity-economy-measures\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">slashed public spending<\/a> in an effort to tame chronic inflation and eliminate the budget deficit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">His administration has frozen pensions, reduced aid to soup kitchens, cut welfare programmes and stopped all public works projects. Tens of thousands of public employees have been fired, reduced energy and transportation subsidies have pushed costs up, and purchasing power has eroded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kirsten Sehnbruch, an expert on Latin America at the London School of Economics and Political Science, said she had never seen such a large jump in poverty rates. \u201cThis new economic programme is not protecting the poor,\u201d she said. \u201cThe jump is absolutely horrendous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Milei\u2019s cuts, however, have been cheered by markets, investors and the International Monetary Fund, to which Argentina owes $43bn. Monthly inflation has also decreased from about 26% in December to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/argentina\/argentina-still-crisis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">about 4% in June<\/a>, where it has remained, although annual inflation still remains one of the highest in the world, exceeding 230%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Mar\u00eda Claudia Albornoz, a community worker from Santa Fe, said the government had \u201cprovoked a situation of desperation\u201d. \u201cWe are feeling it in the fridge, empty and unplugged. Money is really worth absolutely nothing. We have three jobs and it is not enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Also among those affected is 33-year-old Catalina, who works for the ministry of justice and was told last week that she will soon be losing her job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cLast week 2,500 of us were told that we will be out of a job by the end of this year, except for a handful of \u2018lucky ones\u2019 who will be offered to continue working the same hours for half the money,\u201d she said. \u201cI have been looking for another job for months, but there is no work. I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to make it. It\u2019s frightening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Christopher Sabatini, a senior fellow for Latin America at Chatham House, said that economic decline was inevitable when controlling inflation, and pointed to similar historic crises in Brazil and Bolivia, but questioned whether Milei\u2019s changes will work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cIt is dangerous territory. The question is, will this belt-tightening have any benefit? What comes next? Can he actually control public sector spending? Can he shore up the currency? A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/argentinas-milei-sees-gravity-defying-poll-numbers-start-fall-2024-09-24\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">survey published on Monday<\/a> found a drop of almost 15% in September, the steepest fall during his nine-month administration. Recent polls have found that worries about inflation have been overtaken by fears of job loss and poverty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cFor a county that has historically prided itself on being a middle-class nation, this poverty rate is terribly painful,\u201d Sabatini said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Milei\u2019s presidential spokesperson said the government had \u201cinherited a disastrous situation\u201d from previous left-leaning governments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThey left us on the brink of being a country with essentially all of its inhabitants poor,\u201d said Manuel Adorni. \u201cAny level of poverty is horrendous.
