Four more health-care workers who tended to a person hospitalized with H5N1 bird flu have revealed that they had respiratory symptoms after their exposures, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw00062e6b6gkz01gm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One health-care worker who had symptoms had what investigators consider high-risk contact with the patient, meaning they provided care before the hospital advised taking precautions such as wearing a mask when tending to the patient.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw00072e6biqxrr34q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Three additional workers reportedly had low-risk contact with the patient after the hospital required precautions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw00082e6b0mmhgwj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            None of these workers was tested at the time they experienced symptoms, the CDC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/spotlights\/h5n1-response-09272024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw00092e6b93uhdra3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before Friday\u2019s disclosure, two other health-care workers had been identified as having symptoms after caring for this patient, bringing the total number of workers with symptoms to six.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw000a2e6byddbjqie@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To give an idea of the scope of the investigation, 18 health-care workers have been identified as having high-risk exposure to the patient, and 94 others had contact that was considered low-risk, the CDC said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw000b2e6bbe4p73nr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The six health-care workers who fell ill did not have severe symptoms, and they have since resolved.\u00a0One worker tested negative for influenza at the time of their illness.\u00a0The other five will have their blood tested to see whether they have antibodies against the virus, which would show whether they had a past H5N1 infection, the CDC added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw000c2e6b8i64b7hz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It has been three weeks since the CDC and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services announced that a person who had no contact with animals had tested positive for H5N1, the 14th\u00a0human infection in the United States since April.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw000d2e6b7gtqqit6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The other 13 cases were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/h5-monitoring\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in farm workers<\/a>\u00a0who had direct contact with infected dairy cows and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/press-release\/health-officials-confirm-human-cases-of-avian-flu-in-colorado-poultry-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chickens<\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 The cause of the Missouri patient\u2019s infection in still under investigation, which is being led by the state, with assistance from the CDC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw000e2e6bt1urlqqd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            None of the people\u00a0in the US<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with a confirmed H5N1 infection\u00a0is known to have infected other people.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1lbprs500022e6bhhg4pw8v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe investigation is ongoing and there remains no evidence to suggest person-to-person transmission at this time,\u201d Lisa Cox, a spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, wrote in an email to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Person-to-person transmission would raise alarm because it would\u00a0suggest that the virus was changing in ways that could allow it to more easily infect\u00a0humans<strong>.<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1lbq1up00072e6bqml2eurt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The investigation of the bird flu patient\u2019s household contacts has been completed, Cox said. One person who lives in the same house as the patient developed symptoms the same day. However, the timing doesn\u2019t suggest that one person infected the other but that both had a common exposure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1l0fyvg00002e6bav2xi1b5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNeither had typical flu-like symptoms or conjunctivitis,\u201d Cox wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1lbtfp7000a2e6b3ob1nep5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Only one other person had \u201climited\u201d contact with the patient at home, but when questioned, that person said they have not been ill, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw000f2e6bgiklz2jx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other updates, the CDC said that it has developed a test for wastewater that can discriminate samples with H5 viruses from other types of influenza A. This will be particularly helpful as the US moves into flu season and influenza A becomes more common in wastewater.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kzk4rw000g2e6bob3i4s0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC is reminding people:\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cm1kzk4xk000j2e6bduv5fk0w@published\" class=\"list \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\"><strong>Not to touch<\/strong>\u00a0sick or dying animals, including wild and farmed birds and cows.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\"><strong>To avoid bedding and litter<\/strong>\u00a0of animals suspected of having H5N1 influenza.<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\"><strong>Not to drink raw milk<\/strong>.
