NASA\u2019s Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have already been on the International Space Station more than 100 days longer than expected.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn00063b6mspxp8ox1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mission, called Crew-9, is on track to take off as soon as 1:17 p.m. ET Saturday from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. NASA will stream the event live on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn00073b6m8q5cqd5t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The space agency previously delayed the launch attempt from Thursday, rolling the spacecraft back into its hangar as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/weather\/live-news\/hurricane-helene-florida-georgia-09-27-24\/index.html\">Hurricane Helene<\/a> threatened Florida and other parts of the southeastern United States. Mission teams reset everything at the launchpad after the danger had passed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1laea1z00003b6mmy8hyn0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe rolled out a little late this morning,\u201d said Steve Stich, manager of NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew Program, at a Friday news conference. \u201cWe are vertical at the pad.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1lama6900013b6mck7ha43c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A backup launch window is also set for 12:54 p.m. ET Sunday should weather or technical issues force a scrub of Saturday\u2019s attempt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn00083b6m9krpai35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike other routine trips ferrying astronauts to and from the space station under NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew Program\u00a0\u2014 of which SpaceX has already launched eight \u2014 the outbound leg of this mission will carry only two crew members instead of four: NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn00093b6mn29ccwxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two other seats will fly empty, reserved for Williams and Wilmore to occupy on the spacecraft\u2019s return flight in 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000a3b6mrs3ckbr9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The configuration is part of an ad hoc plan that NASA chose to implement in late August after the space agency deemed the Starliner capsule too risky to return with Williams and Wilmore. The two rode the Starliner to the International Space Station in early June for what was expected to be about a weeklong test flight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000c3b6mmw2685i3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At liftoff, Hague and Gorbunov will be strapped inside the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, nicknamed Freedom, as it sits atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The launch vehicle will roar to life, powering on nine massive engines that sit at its base to thrust the 1.2 million-pound (544,300-kilogram) rocket system into the air.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000d3b6m1zm1y4h1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After about 2 \u00bd minutes, the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket will quit firing and break away from the rocket\u2019s second stage. The second stage will then ignite its own engine and continue to propel the Crew Dragon capsule to more than 17,000 miles per hour (27,360 kilometers per hour) \u2014 or 22 times the speed of sound.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000e3b6mwmxv49lf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the crew blazes to faster speeds, the rocket\u2019s first stage will guide itself back and land on a ground pad in Florida so that SpaceX can refurbish and reuse the vehicle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000f3b6m2npqefvp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Once the Crew Dragon capsule reaches orbital speeds, the spacecraft will separate from the Falcon 9\u2019s second stage and begin maneuvering through orbit on its own, using onboard thrusters to adjust its position gradually so it can link up with the International Space Station, expected at about\u00a05:30 p.m. ET Sunday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000g3b6mvc2nduje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams and Wilmore watched on September 6 as their Boeing-built capsule returned from the station without them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000h3b6mirvyxeay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Engineers had worked for months to understand issues with helium leaks and thruster outages that had plagued the Starliner\u2019s journey to the space station, and NASA ultimately declared too many uncertainties and risks existed to trust the vehicle to transport crew on its return trip. It\u2019s not clear when Boeing\u2019s Starliner might fly again.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000i3b6m7lr4via1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA remains in the same situation it has been in for four years, with SpaceX as the sole provider for the space agency\u2019s Commercial Crew Program, which was designed to hand over the task of crew rotations at the International Space Station to the private sector. (Boeing and SpaceX were each awarded contracts in 2014, and SpaceX began flying routine trips in 2020, while Boeing has struggled to push Starliner development to the finish line.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000j3b6mt845wyap@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To get Williams and Wilmore home, NASA turned to SpaceX \u2014 opting to remove two previously assigned members from its Crew-9 team to make room for the Starliner test pilots.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000k3b6malldra1a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The space agency\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/correction-nasas-spacex-crew-9-changes-ahead-of-september-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0at the end of August that NASA astronauts Stephanie Wilson and Zena Cardman would be the members booted from the mission. Cardman had been set to make her first trip to space and was expected to be commander of the Crew-9 mission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000l3b6m8watuntb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gorbunov, a Russian cosmonaut who got his seat via a ride-sharing agreement inked between NASA and Russia\u2019s space agency, Roscosmos, remained on the crew. And Cardman handed over commander duties\u00a0\u2014 the top position on a spaceflight \u2014 to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/astronauts\/tyler-n-hague\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hague<\/a>, who had previously been named the pilot for Crew-9.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000m3b6mtq7kakck@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHanding the helm to (Hague) is both heartbreaking and an honor. Nick and Alex are truly an excellent team, and they will be ready to step up,\u201d Cardman said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zenanaut\/status\/1829587809134661721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a>\u00a0on the social platform X, formerly Twitter, after the announcement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000n3b6met9qo9lm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI only wish (Wilson), Nick, Alex, and I could fly together, but we choose without hesitation to be part of something much larger than ourselves. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/ad%20astra%20per%20aspera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ad astra per aspera<\/a>. Go Crew 9.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000o3b6mj586qt94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, Williams and Wilmore have folded into daily life on the space station.\u00a0The duo\u00a0transitioned\u00a0from a lighter test mission schedule to taking on roles as full-time crew members,\u00a0with Williams assuming the role of commander\u00a0at the orbiting laboratory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000p3b6m255zycwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gorbunov and Hague will join them after docking with the space station, set for Sunday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000q3b6mi1xn7us5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When asked if he had trouble adjusting to the prospect of waiting months longer to get home, Wilmore said during a September 13 news briefing from the space station, \u201cI\u2019m not gonna fret over it. I mean, there\u2019s no benefit to it at all. So my transition was \u2014 maybe it wasn\u2019t instantaneous \u2014 but it was pretty close.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1jrtzmn000r3b6mut60eonh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams said that she missed her family and was disappointed to miss some family events this fall and winter, but she added, \u201cThis is my happy place. I love being up here in space. It\u2019s just fun. You know, every day you do something that\u2019s work, quote, unquote, you can do it upside down.
