But along the way, it became one of the best-funded companies in Silicon Valley. Now, the tension between those two facts is coming to a head.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Weeks after releasing a new model it claims can \u201creason,\u201d OpenAI is barreling toward dropping its nonprofit status, some of its most senior employees are leaving, and CEO Sam Altman \u2014\u00a0who was once briefly ousted over apparent trust concerns \u2014 is solidifying his position as one of the most powerful people in tech.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">On Wednesday, OpenAI\u2019s longtime chief technology officer, Mira Murati, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/25\/24254431\/openai-cto-mira-murati-leaving\">announced she\u2019s leaving<\/a> \u201cto create the time and space to do my own exploration.\u201d The same day, chief research officer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bobmcgrewai\/status\/1839099787423134051\">Bob McGrew<\/a> and VP of post training <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/barret_zoph\/status\/1839095143397515452\">Barret Zoph<\/a> said they would depart as well. OpenAI cofounder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who delivered Altman the news of his firing before publicly walking back his criticism, left OpenAI in May. It\u2019s looking to raise funds from the likes of Thrive, Apple, and an investment firm backed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/openai-in-talks-with-emirati-fund-mgx-for-7-billion-fundraise?rc=mshudk\">United Arab Emirates<\/a>, with a minimum investment of a quarter-billion dollars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">OpenAI doesn\u2019t have deep pockets or existing established businesses like Google or Meta, which are both building competing models (though it\u2019s worth noting that these are public companies with their own responsibilities to Wall Street.) Fellow AI startup Anthropic, which was founded by former OpenAI researchers, is nipping at OpenAI\u2019s heels while looking to raise new funds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/openai-rival-anthropic-has-floated-40-billion-valuation-in-early-talks-about-new-funding?rc=mshudk\">at a $40 billion valuation<\/a>. So it made perfect sense that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/09\/13\/sam-altman-openai-non-profit-structure-change-next-year\/\">Altman told employees<\/a> earlier this month that OpenAI would restructure as a for-profit company next year. This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-25\/openai-cto-mira-murati-says-she-will-leave-the-company?embedded-checkout=true\"><em>Bloomberg <\/em>reported<\/a> that the company is considering becoming a public benefit corporation (like Anthropic) and that investors are planning to give Altman a 7 percent stake. (Altman almost immediately denied this in a staff meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/behind-openais-staff-churn-turf-wars-burnout-compensation-demands?utm_source=ti_app&amp;rc=mshudk\">calling it \u201cludicrous.\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And crucially, in the course of these changes, OpenAI\u2019s nonprofit parent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-remove-non-profit-control-give-sam-altman-equity-sources-say-2024-09-25\/\">would reportedly lose control<\/a>. Only a few weeks after this news was reported, Murati and company were out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Both Altman and Murati claim that the timing is only coincidental and that the CTO is just looking to leave while the company is on the \u201cupswing.\u201d Murati (through representatives) declined to speak to <em>The Verge <\/em>about the sudden move. Wojciech Zaremba, one of the last remaining OpenAI cofounders, compared <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/woj_zaremba\/status\/1839696945008582672?s=46&amp;t=JbshpLj_RqMDHpGS2uZiWw\">the departures<\/a> to \u201cthe hardships parents faced in the Middle Ages when 6 out of 8 children would die.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Whatever the reason, this marks an almost total turnover of OpenAI leadership since last year. Besides Altman himself, the last remaining member seen on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-openai-really-wants\/\">a September 2023 <em>Wired<\/em> cover<\/a> is president and cofounder Greg Brockman, who backed Altman during the coup. But even he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/trio-of-leaders-leave-openai?rc=mshudk\">been on a personal leave of absence<\/a> since August and isn\u2019t expected to return until next year. Many likely joined to focus on AI research, not to build and sell products. And while OpenAI is still a nonprofit, it\u2019s not hard to guess how a profit-focused version would work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Research labs work on longer timelines than companies chasing revenue. They can delay product releases when necessary, with less pressure to launch quickly and scale up. Perhaps most importantly, they can be more conservative about safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">There\u2019s already evidence OpenAI is focusing on fast launches over cautious ones: a source told <em>The Washington Post<\/em> in July that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2024\/07\/12\/openai-ai-safety-regulation-gpt4\/\">the company threw a launch party<\/a> for GPT-4o \u201cprior to knowing if it was safe to launch.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/open-ai-division-for-profit-da26c24b\"><em>The Wall Street Journal <\/em>reported<\/a> on Friday that the safety staffers worked 20-hour days and didn\u2019t have time to double-check their work. The initial results of tests showed GPT-4o wasn\u2019t safe enough to deploy, but it was deployed anyway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Meanwhile, OpenAI researchers are continuing to work on building what they consider to be the next steps toward human-level artificial intelligence. o1, OpenAI\u2019s first \u201creasoning\u201d model, is the beginning of a new series that the company hopes will power intelligent automated \u201cagents.\u201d The company is consistently rolling out features just ahead of competitors \u2014 this week, it launched Advanced Voice Mode for all users just days before Meta announced a similar product at Connect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">So, what is OpenAI becoming?
