But also rest assured that most Gulf of Mexico storms are near-misses \u2014 one has not directly hit Tampa since 1921 \u2014 and keep enjoying life on the coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lately, though, the calculus has changed. A rash of Gulf storms in recent years, culminating with Hurricane Helene on Thursday, has given way to a new reality for the booming region\u2019s residents: Hurricanes that remain hundreds of miles away are likely to wreak havoc on the Tampa Bay region, as are smaller storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Helene, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall near Perry, Fla., some 200 miles north of Tampa. It followed a path similar to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/30\/us\/idalia-damage-florida.html\" title=\"\">Hurricane Idalia<\/a> in August of last year and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2024\/weather\/debby-storm-forecast\" title=\"\">Hurricane Debby<\/a> last month.
