I\u2019m not talking about security cameras or my fellow reporters\u2019 DSLRs. I\u2019m not even talking about smartphones. I mean Ray-Ban and Meta\u2019s smart glasses, which Meta hopes we\u2019ll all \u2014 one day, in some form \u2014 wear.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I visited Meta for this year\u2019s Connect conference, where just about every hardware product involved cameras. They\u2019re on the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses that got a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/25\/24253712\/meta-rayban-ai-features-reminders-translation-transparent-style\">software update<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24252316\/meta-quest-3s-hands-on-connect-2024\">new Quest 3S virtual reality headset<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24253908\/meta-orion-ar-glasses-demo-mark-zuckerberg-interview\">Meta\u2019s prototype Orion AR glasses<\/a>. Orion is what Meta calls a \u201ctime machine\u201d: a functioning example of what full-fledged AR could look like, years before it will be consumer-ready.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But on Meta\u2019s campus, at least, the Ray-Bans were already everywhere. The glasses, which follow 2021\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/9\/9\/22662809\/facebook-ray-ban-stories-camera-smart-glasses-hands-on\">Ray-Ban Stories<\/a>, are apparently making inroads on that front, as Zuckerberg told <em>The Verge<\/em> sales are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24253481\/meta-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-ar-glasses-orion-ray-bans-ai-decoder-interview\">going \u201cvery well.\u201d<\/a> They aren\u2019t full-fledged AR glasses since they have no screen to display information, though they\u2019re becoming more powerful with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/21\/24250020\/ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-ai-hardware-meta-connect\">AI features<\/a>. But they\u2019re perfect for what the whole Meta empire is built on: encouraging people to share their lives online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The glasses come in a variety of classic Ray-Ban styles, but for now, it\u2019s obvious users aren\u2019t just wearing glasses. As I wandered the campus, I spotted the telltale signs on person after person: two prominent circle cutouts at the edges of their glasses, one for a 12MP ultrawide camera and the other for an indicator light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">This light flashes when a user is taking photos and videos, and it\u2019s generally visible even in sunlight. In theory, that should have put my mind at ease: if the light wasn\u2019t on, I could trust nobody was capturing footage of me tucking into some lunch before my meetings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But as I talked with people around campus, I was always slightly on edge. I found myself keenly aware of those circles, checking to see if somebody was filming me when I wasn\u2019t paying attention. The mere potential of a recording would distract me from conversations, inserting a low hum of background anxiety.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">When I put a pair on for myself, the situation changed<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Then, when I put a pair on for myself, the situation suddenly changed. As a potential target of recording, I\u2019d been hesitant, worried I might be photographed or filmed as a byproduct of making polite eye contact. With the glasses on my own face, though, I felt that I should be recording <em>more<\/em>. There\u2019s something really compelling about the experience of a camera right at the level of your eyes. By just pressing a button on the glasses, I could take a photo or video of anything I was seeing at exactly the angle I was seeing it. No awkward fumble of pulling out my phone and hoping the moment lasted. There might be no better way to share my reality with other people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Meta\u2019s smart glasses have been around for a few years now, and I\u2019m hardly the first person \u2014\u00a0or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23922425\/ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-review\">the first person at <em>The Verge<\/em><\/a> \u2014 to be impressed by them. But this was the first time I\u2019d seen these glasses not as early adopter tech, but as a ubiquitous product like a phone or smartwatch. I got a hint of how this seamless recording would work at scale,\u00a0and the prospect is both exciting and terrifying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The camera phone was a revolution in its own right, and we\u2019re still grappling with its social effects. Nearly anyone can now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/6\/16\/21293013\/smartphone-cameras-police-brutality-incidents-capture-wall-street-journal\">document police brutality<\/a> or capture a fleeting funny moment, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/10\/14\/3499796\/reddit-moderator-secrecy-subreddit-control\">take creepshots<\/a> and post them online or (a far lesser offense, to be clear) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/02\/17\/live-events-concerts-smartphones\/\">annoy people at concerts<\/a>. What will happen when even the minimal friction of pulling a phone out drops away, and billions of people can immediately snap a picture of anything they see?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Personally, I can see how incredibly useful this would be to capture candid photos of my new baby, who is already starting to recognize when a phone is taking a picture of her. But it\u2019s not hard to imagine far more malicious uses. Sure, you might think that we all got used to everyone pointing their phone cameras at everything, but I\u2019m not exactly sure that\u2019s a good thing; I don\u2019t like that there\u2019s a possibility I end up in somebody\u2019s TikTok just because I stepped outside the house. (The rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/the-end-of-privacy-is-a-taylor-swift-fan-tiktok-account-armed-with-facial-recognition-tech\/\">sophisticated facial recognition<\/a> makes the risks even greater.) With ubiquitous glasses-equipped cameras, I feel like there\u2019s an even greater possibility that my face shows up somewhere on the internet without my permission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">There are also clear risks to integrating cameras into what is, for many people, a nonnegotiable vision aid. If you already wear glasses and switch to prescription smart glasses, you\u2019ll either have to carry a low-tech backup or accept that they\u2019ll stay on in some potentially very awkward places, like a public bathroom. The current Ray-Ban Meta glasses are largely sunglasses, so they\u2019re probably not most people\u2019s primary set. But you can get them with clear and transition lenses, and I bet Meta would like to market them more as everyday specs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Of course, there\u2019s no guarantee most people will buy them. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses are pretty good gadgets now, but I was at Meta\u2019s campus meeting Meta employees to preview Meta hardware for a Meta event. It\u2019s not surprising Meta\u2019s latest hardware was commonplace, and it doesn\u2019t necessarily tell us much about what people outside that world want.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Camera glasses have been just over the horizon for years now. Remember how magical I said taking pictures of what\u2019s right in front of your eyes is? My former colleague Sean O\u2019Kane relayed almost the exact same experience with Snap Spectacles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/11\/21\/13671164\/snapchat-spectacles-glasses-review-camera-sunglasses\"><em>back in 2016<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But Meta is the first company to make a credible play for mainstream acceptance.
