to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.t07.htm\"><u>Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/u><\/a>, and the average price for a dozen large, grade A eggs was $3.20 in August.<\/p>\n<div That, paired with higher consumer demand, is contributing to the sticker shock many Americans may be experiencing in the aisles, experts say.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"edTag\">Widespread bird flu outbreaks in recent years<\/h2>\n<p>Some of the most severe outbreaks of bird flu \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\">highly pathogenic avian <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\">in<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\">fluenza, or  (HPAI)<\/a> \u2014 happened in 2014 and 2022.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>More than 50 million birds died in the 2014-2015 outbreak, while more than 100 million birds have died since the outbreak that started in 2022. Dockworkers on the East Coast and Gulf Coast have threatened to strike as early as October 1, if a new contract deal is not reached.\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/a>         <\/p>\n<p><!-- END CLASS=\"BUCKETBLOCK\" -->\n      <\/div>\n<p><!-- END CLASS=\"BUCKET IMG\" -->\n   <\/div>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESNX-S1-5126581-103\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Plus, while the supply is impaired, demand is still high.<\/p>\n<p>Metz says retail demand for eggs has been up for 18 consecutive four-week periods, even during the summer, when people typically eat fewer of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the good news here \u2026 is that Americans love their eggs,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan State University&#8217;s Ortega says current food prices are a culmination of events over the last few years, including the bird flu outbreak, the coronavirus pandemic and international conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, no, that doesn&#8217;t mean that prices are coming down necessarily,\u201d he says. \u201cIt just means that they&#8217;re not increasing as quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hagerman of Oklahoma State says, \u201cI think that part of the challenge is if grocery prices still feel kind of high relative to where they were three or four years ago, then that additional increase on top of that just feels that much worse as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"edTag\">What can consumers expect next?<\/h2>\n<p>Bird flu is unpredictable, so it&#8217;s hard to say how it may continue to affect egg prices.<\/p>\n<p>However, evidence suggests surges typically happen in the spring and fall, as birds migrate. Additionally, when bird flu outbreaks happen, flocks have to be repopulated.
