And the supermassive <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/black-hole-picture-scientists-explain\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">black hole<\/a> at its center is shooting an outstretched beam of energy into <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/category\/space\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">space<\/a>. But material can rapidly spin around black holes, forming a vibrant &#8220;accretion disk&#8221; that radiates light. And, sometimes material falling into a black hole can &#8220;become rerouted&#8221; into two jets, firing in opposite directions, NASA explained.<\/p>\n<section x-data=\"window.newsletter()\" x-init=\"init()\" class=\"relative p-8 my-12 mx-auto w-full max-w-3xl border md:p-12 md:my-16 border-secondary-300\" data-ga-impression=\"\" data-ga-category=\"newsletters\" data-ga-module=\"incontent_nl_signup\" data-ga-label=\"mashablelightspeed\">\n<p>\nMashable Light Speed\n<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/nasa-asteroid-dart-mission-hubble-image\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubble telescope<\/a> image below, the colossal elliptical galaxy M87, which is shaped like a giant egg, looks like &#8220;a translucent, fuzzy white cotton ball,&#8221; ESA explained. The swollen star dumps material (hydrogen) on the white dwarf. &#8220;When the dwarf has tanked up a mile-deep surface layer of hydrogen that layer explodes like a giant nuclear bomb,&#8221; the agency explained. And then the gradual process renews. <\/p>\n<p>Compared to the rest of the galaxy, the researchers found twice as many novae happening in the vicinity of that vivid blue jet than elsewhere in M87. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s something that the jet is doing to the star systems that wander into the surrounding neighborhood,&#8221; Lessing said. &#8220;Maybe the jet somehow snowplows hydrogen fuel onto the white dwarfs, causing them to erupt more frequently.&#8221; However, a number of other possibilities could explain it, too.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers will keep watching this energetic region of space.
