<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s basically a tailored approach to dosing Ozempic to meet the needs of the individual,\u201d board-certified family physician and obesity medicine specialist\u00a0Dr. Britta\u00a0Reierson told USA Today. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, where we get concerned is when this is happening without any guidance from a medical professional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weight loss drugs like Ozempic have<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/22\/lifestyle\/new-ozempic-data-reveals-whos-on-it-prompts-shortage-fears\/\"> spurred a frenzy <\/a>in Hollywood and beyond despite reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/29\/lifestyle\/experts-warn-of-dangerous-weight-loss-drug-side-effect-reckless-behvavior\/\">adverse side effects<\/a>, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/25\/lifestyle\/ozempic-users-travel-1000-miles-for-weight-loss-drugs\/\">shortages<\/a> of the medication and, in turn, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/01\/fda-reports-adverse-effects-of-off-brand-ozempic-amid-shortage\/\">the creation of off-brand dupes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Now, patients are flocking to specialists to get a prescription for the medication to take in smaller doses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/smithvillechannel\/reel\/C8kO0jSuy5Z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boasting their progress online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Neurosurgeon and longevity expert Dr. Brett Osborn told USA Today that he even microdoses weight loss medication, explaining that it can be helpful for those who lost a significant amount of weight on the standard dose and want to keep off the pounds with less of the drug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe medications are not to be stopped,\u201d he said. \u201cYou just keep the gas pressed, albeit smaller amounts, and that weight loss will be Lipedema Treatment Program at The Roxbury Institute, blames social media for the piqued interest in drugs like Ozempic, even among people who don\u2019t necessarily need it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of it has to do with social media,\u201d he told USA Today. \u201cIt\u2019s been with the celebrity scene\u2026 People have been talking about it in podcasts. So there\u2019s a lot of interest in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Obesity medicine specialist Dr. Alexandra Sowa, the founder of SoWell, said that she\u2019s seen an influx in people requesting microdoses of the once weekly jab. <\/p>\n<p>She suspects the uptick could, in part, be connected to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-commentary\/ozempic-shame-semaglutide-shortage-1234932411\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ozempic shame<\/a>,\u201d a term coined to describe the stigma surrounding the use of the medication as a weight loss aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften in managing weight, there\u2019s so much stigma and bias from both the clinician side and the patient side that often people\u2019s brains want to try to tell them that they can outsmart the system,\u201d she told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll feel better about the fact that they\u2019re on a medication if they go to a smaller dose, and, really, what we need to get to the root of is, let\u2019s make this patient feel whole from the beginning, that there\u2019s nothing wrong with using a medication,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the sky-high costs of the weight loss drugs could be causing some cash-strapped users to be rationing their supply without appropriate medical guidance. <\/p>\n<p>Experts are now concerned that patients with Ozempic prescriptions will try to microdose at home, which could cause an adverse reaction, warned Osborn. Patients should always consult with their doctors before taking new medications or changing dosage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not ever blame this on the medication.
