accused of \u201cbullying\u201d after slapping nearby Oakland with a trademark lawsuit \u2014\u00a0sharply warning the crossbay rival to \u201cstay away\u201d from its brand.<\/p>\n<p>The brouhaha by the Bay began after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/20\/us-news\/fbi-raids-oakland-mayor-sheng-thaos-home\/\">the burg Gertrude Stein once described as having \u201cno there there\u201d<\/a> rebranded its airport (OAK) \u2014 formerly known as \u201cMetropolitan Oakland International\u201d \u2014\u00a0to the broader \u201cSan Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.\u201d San Francisco disagreed. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The move was designed to better inform travelers as to the airport\u2019s location, Port of Oakland officials stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe convenience and ease of traveling through OAK won\u2019t change with our name,\u201d the port\u2019s Interim Director of Aviation Craig Simon assured reporters earlier this year. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cOAK is the closest major airport to 58 percent of the Bay Area population. The combined population of the counties closest to OAK is 4.1 million compared with 1.5 million in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. This designation will let the world know who we serve,\u201d Simon explained.<\/p>\n<p>But critics \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/22\/us-news\/is-san-francisco-still-liberal\/\">starting with the neighbors over the bridge<\/a> \u2014\u00a0were less than impressed.<\/p>\n<p>Now, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu is calling for a ground stop against the Port, accusing them of \u201cintentionally and knowingly capitalizing off of confusion,\u201d CNN Travel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/travel-news-san-francisco-oakland-airport-name-confusion\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure We have built an incredible brand that we must protect. Oakland has a trademark for Oakland International Airport. It should use that and stay away from San Francisco\u2019s brand,\u201d the city\u2019s legal honcho sniped.<\/p>\n<p>Port reps were quick to pour water on the claims. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent injunctive relief request by the San Francisco City Attorney\u2019s Office is a continuation of tactics rooted in publicity and anti-competitive bullying rather than on legal merits,\u201d Port attorney Mary Richardson retorted in a statement of her own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK, filed a counterclaim against SFO and has not yet received a response. In fact, at SFO\u2019s request, OAK had agreed to extensions for SFO to respond to OAK\u2019s claims. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, it appears that SFO sought to manufacture confusion under the cloak of legal filings and try to erase OAK from the map,\u201d Richardson claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The municipal maneuvering comes as<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/10\/news\/california-gov-gavin-newsom-sends-prosecutors-to-oakland-over-raging-crime-blamed-on-woke-da\/\"> recently crime-plagued Oakland has been left reeling<\/a> after losing three major-league sports franchises.<\/p>\n<p>The Athletics <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/26\/sports\/smoke-bombs-chaos-and-crying-as-final-game-in-oakland-had-it-all\/\">played their last game at the Oakland Coliseum on Thursday<\/a>, ahead of a controversial move to Las Vegas. <\/p>\n<p>The Raiders departed for Sin City in 2020.
