He repeated his fears \u2014 which have ebbed and flowed over the course of the past year, but are now at a high point \u2014 that a wider conflict could be on the horizon: \u201cI\u2019m always concerned about that,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000e3b6llvzqm64p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet for all that concern, Israel\u2019s target was undoubtedly someone the White House wanted dead.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000f3b6lwat9jhvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s welcome,\u201d one senior administration official told CNN after both the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah\u2019s death.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000g3b6lnm2zcz3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNobody here is mourning Nasrallah,\u201d another senior administration official said, referring to the Hezbollah leader as a \u201cterrorist\u201d and \u201ckiller.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000h3b6lsejhvgyc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHassan Nasrallah was a terrorist with American blood on his hands,\u201d wrote Vice President Kamala Harris in a statement released midday Saturday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000i3b6l5i52usbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As of Saturday morning, it was simply too early to know what implications Nasrallah\u2019s death would have in the region and on the looming possibility of a major escalation, one of the officials said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000j3b6ldib13z16@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The American posture for now is to be prepared for a range of possible retaliations \u2014 if and when they come \u2014 but whether such retaliation would come from Hezbollah, Iran or both was unknowable for now, they said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000k3b6lic9m70m5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The biggest question and concern for the Biden administration is what implications Nasrallah\u2019s death will have in the coming days and weeks in the region, where the risk of escalation and a widening conflict was already high.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000l3b6lyz8gjah5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Had the events of the past few days taken place six months ago, the risk of a second major war might have been even greater, the\u00a0first\u00a0senior administration official said. But\u00a0Hezbollah has been \u201cdecimated,\u201d and Iran \u2014 which backs the militant group \u2014 has also been \u201cmuch weakened,\u201d\u00a0the official said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000m3b6lbgsc4ufx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the last month, Israel has taken out Hezbollah weapons depots and seriously deteriorated its communication infrastructure, including in attacks on pagers and walkie-talkies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1mjmza3000n3b6lpzjh6pjo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another senior US official previously told CNN that the US believes Iran will intervene in the conflict if its leaders determine that they are about to \u201close\u201d Hezbollah, Iran\u2019s most
