He was the most amazing husband, father, papa and actor. He loved performing for the Days audience and sharing the stage with the greatest cast, crew, and production team in the business. We love him and we will miss him all the Days of our Lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hogestyn wanted to be an oral surgeon before moving to Los Angeles.  <span class=\"credit\">Evans Vestal Ward\/Peacock via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Hogestyn was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He played college baseball at the University of South Florida and earned a double major in microbiology and applied sciences, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soapoperadigest.com\/content\/days-of-our-lives-superstar-drake-hogestyn-john-dies-at-70\/\">according to Soap Opera Digest<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>He planned on becoming an oral surgeon but instead was drafted by the Cardinals and then the Yankees, who selected Hogestyn in the final round of the 1976 MLB Draft. He played in the organization\u2019s minor league system until injuries derailed his career. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who can keep injury-free and their head together and their weight down, those are the ones who are going to move up,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/news\/drake-hogestyn-recalls-his-younger-days-312653216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told MiLB in 2020<\/a>. \u201cBut when you\u2019re a last-round pick and you mix in an injury \u2026 there\u2019s no investment there. And I knew that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He moved to Los Angeles after being selected for an acting training program with Columbia Pictures.<\/p>\n<p>The actor was cast as the character of John Black \u2013 a mysterious police officer, private investigator and secret agent on the show. Hogestyn starred in the hit soap opera for 38 years and filmed over 4,200 episodes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>He moved to Los Angeles after being selected for an actor training program training program with Columbia Pictures.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hogestyn joined the cast of \u201cDays of our Lives\u201d in 1986.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other credits include \u201cSeven Brides for Seven Brothers,\u201d a guest role in \u201cCriminal Minds\u201d and acting in the Hallmark holiday movie \u201cChristmas Tree Lane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hogestyn\u2019s castmates remembered the actor as an \u201cincredible man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alison Sweeney, who played Sami Brady on the show <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Ali_Sweeney\/status\/1840232233434575326\">wrote on X<\/a> \u201cDrake was an incredible man. He was funny, generous and thoughtful. He cared about every single scene, every person. He loved Days, the fans, and shared that passion with everyone on set. My heart breaks for his family, they meant everything to him.\u00a0 He was such a huge part of my life at Days. I will miss him terribly and treasure every story, every joke &amp; every hug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will always love you. You were more than just my tv father, in my eyes you were my dad. Thank you for everything you taught me and the love you gave me. The world lost a true Hero. Miss and love you so much Drake. Rest in Peace Dad,\u201d said Christopher Sean, who played the role of his television son on \u201cDOOL.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>In 2020, he appeared in the Hallmark film \u201cChristmas Tree Lane.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Instagram\/ @drakehogestyn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSo sad to hear of Drake Hogestyn\u2019s passing,\u201d Genie Francis, who appeared on the show for 2 years said. \u201cSuch a wonderful and kind man. It was a pleasure to work with him.
