They will joust for 90 minutes under the moderation of CBS News as they seek to give their respective running mates \u2013 Kamala Harris and Donald Trump \u2013 a leg up to the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Walz has been prepping for the debate in Minneapolis with the US transportation secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/pete-buttigieg\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Pete Buttigieg<\/a>, masquerading as Vance. Emmer is a fellow Minnesotan, so has the benefit of having studied Walz up close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The two running mates bring contrasting strengths to the gladiatorial ring. Vance is an experienced debater who will relish confrontation under the glare of the TV lights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cLook, he\u2019s a Yale law guy,\u201d Walz has said about his opponent. \u201cHe\u2019ll come well prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Walz by contrast will be able to lean on skills learned in the school classroom. Walz spent 17 years as a public school teacher, so he knows how to think on his feet \u2013 and deal with a disruptive kid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cI expect to see a very heated debate,\u201d Robby Mook, Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign manager, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tim-walz-jd-vance-debate-prep\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">One of the big questions of the night is likely to be whether Vance can redeem himself after a troubled start to his candidacy. Will he be able to get past all the \u201cweirdness\u201d, as Walz has framed it, and bring consistency to the messaging of an often chaotic Trump campaign?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">From awkward encounters with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GvnakEcxMiA\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">doughnut shop workers<\/a>, to the ongoing furor around his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/06\/jd-vance-childless-cat-ladies-tim-walz\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cchildless cat ladies\u201d<\/a> remark, Vance has been the subject of online mockery that has at times appeared to engulf him. He also seems to be stuck on the same culture war issues that consume Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cVance does not seem to have drawn additional voters to the Trump ticket, as the controversies he gets into are exactly the same as those the former president gets into,\u201d said Barry Burden, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Most egregiously, Vance has doubled down on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/sep\/20\/mike-dewine-ohio-trump-vance-haitian-immigrants\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">false and racist narrative<\/a> that Haitian immigrants are eating family pets in Springfield, Ohio, despite categorical denials from local authorities. He recently confessed to CNN that he was willing to \u201ccreate stories\u201d if it meant that he attracted media attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Such comments have sunk Vance underwater in the opinion of the voting public \u2013 his <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/favorability\/jd-vance\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">unfavorability rating<\/a> is 11 points higher than his favorable, according to FiveThirtyEight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Walz by contrast is basking in the glow of a positive four-point gap between his <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/favorability\/tim-walz\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">favorability ratings<\/a>, which poses him with a completely different set of challenges on debate night. He will need to parry Vance\u2019s attempts to frame him as the misinformation candidate based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/07\/tim-walz-jd-vance-military-service\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">misrepresentations<\/a> Walz made about his military record, defuse his rivals claims that he is dangerously liberal, and refuse to be knocked off track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cWalz just needs to get in and out of the debate without causing trouble for his ticket,\u201d Burden said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">John Conway, director of strategy for Republican Voters Against Trump, said that Walz was best advised to follow Harris\u2019s playbook. He organised focus groups the day after Harris\u2019s debate with Trump, involving voters from five battleground states who backed Trump in 2016 but switched to Biden in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The focus group attendees were enthusiastic about Harris\u2019s dual approach to the debate \u2013 attack Trump for his lies and felony convictions, but also lay out a positive plan for the future of the country. \u201cThat\u2019s the blueprint Walz must follow,\u201d Conway said, \u201cattack when appropriate but also be substantive on the issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">There have been several memorable made-for-TV moments from the VP debates since the first in 1976 between senators Bob Dole and Walter Mondale. Most celebrated is the 1988 incident when the Democrat Lloyd Bentsen chastised George H Bush\u2019s running mate, Dan Quayle, for comparing himself to John F Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cSenator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you\u2019re no Jack Kennedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThat was really uncalled for, senator,\u201d Quayle wailed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">More recently, John McCain\u2019s running mate, Sarah Palin, ribbed Joe Biden, the Democratic VP candidate running with Barack Obama, in 2008, by telling him: \u201cAw, say it ain\u2019t so, Joe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Those were neat soundbites that entered the lexicons. But it is notable that neither Bentsen nor Palin were rewarded where it matters \u2013 at the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In fact, vice-presidential debates have tended to be underwhelming in terms of the lasting imprint they have left on US elections. Larry Sabato, professor of politics at the University of Virginia, pointed out that even after the dynamic presidential debate between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/sep\/11\/trump-harris-debate-analysis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Harris and Trump<\/a> earlier this month, which was watched by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/abc-us-presidential-debate-attracted-575-million-tv-viewers-preliminary-nielsen-2024-09-11\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">67 million TV viewers<\/a> and which Harris was widely judged to have won, the race remains essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2024\/aug\/23\/presidential-polls-kamala-harris-donald-trump-election\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">neck-and-neck<\/a> in the critical battleground states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Sabato said that given the lack of consequences from the debate at the top of the ticket, he expected Tuesday\u2019s vice-presidential tussle to be equally inconclusive. \u201cI don\u2019t expect the vice-presidential debate to make any impact,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Yet this is no ordinary election. Joe Biden\u2019s departure and the sudden elevation of Harris, together with Trump refusing to participate in a second debate with her, has raised the stakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Tuesday\u2019s spectacle will probably be the final debate before election day on 5 November. \u201cThis is really the last main national moment in the campaign, so I do think it is important,\u201d Mook said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Apart from the economy, immigration and foreign wars, which are certain to be addressed during the debate, a more amorphous struggle is likely to play out on stage: who will own the mantle of \u201cauthentic midwesterner\u201d? Will it be Nebraska-born Walz, or the bestselling author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/dec\/07\/hillbilly-elegy-by-jd-vance-review\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Hillbilly Elegy<\/a>, Ohio\u2019s Vance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The rivalry goes beyond mere aesthetics or regional loyalties. It resonates heavily in those states where the election could be decided \u2013 the three so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/21\/kamala-harris-blue-wall-voters-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cblue wall\u201d states<\/a> of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if the word \u2018midwestern\u2019 will be used in the debate, but feelings about the midwest will come through,\u201d Burden said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The candidates offer a diametrically opposed vision of the heartlands. Walz\u2019s midwest is folksy and homely, a world where neighbors look after each other, where football coaches double up as local heroes (Walz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/article\/2024\/aug\/21\/clear-eyes-full-heart-the-unlikely-championship-that-launched-tim-walz\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">coached the sport<\/a> at Mankato West high school from 1997), and where joy fills the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Vance\u2019s is a much darker picture of drug addiction, broken families and the threat of immigration. His is the midwest of Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerican carnage\u201d dystopia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Two utterly contrasting visions. Two tough and determined candidates.
