The vehicle, on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/24\/science\/boeing-starliner-nasa-astronauts-spacex\/index.html\">mission called Crew-9<\/a>, is expected to dock at about 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta00043b6m69u7i6wh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On board the SpaceX vehicle are NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. Alongside them are two empty seats, saved for Williams and Wilmore to occupy when the group returns to Earth next year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta00053b6mn0aycx3r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hague and Gorbunov <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/28\/science\/spacex-launch-starliner-crew-9-astronauts\/index.html\">launched<\/a> aboard the Crew Dragon Saturday afternoon from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Though they reached their intended orbit without a hitch, SpaceX later revealed that the second stage, or upper portion, of the Falcon 9 rocket that powered the first part of their journey experienced an issue after it broke away from the capsule.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1nllx0d00003b6mg3756msv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAfter today\u2019s successful launch of Crew-9, Falcon 9\u2019s second stage was disposed in the ocean as planned, but experienced an off-nominal deorbit burn,\u201d the company shared in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpaceX\/status\/1840245345118498987https:\/\/x.com\/SpaceX\/status\/1840245345118498987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post on X<\/a>, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. \u201cAs a result, the second stage safely landed in the ocean, but outside of the targeted area.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1nlxzmm00043b6m2g55iokm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SpaceX indicated it would pause flights using Falcon 9 \u2014\u00a0the world\u2019s most frequently launched rocket \u2014 as it explored the anomaly. \u201cWe will resume launching after we better understand root cause,\u201d the company said in the X post.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1nl19vl00063b6m17mh5nxp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, Crew-9\u2019s SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule has spent about one day traveling through orbit<strong> <\/strong>as it prepares to dock with the International Space Station. The group will spend about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/09\/science\/boeing-starliner-nasa-astronauts-spacex\/index.html\">five months on board<\/a> the space station before returning home no earlier than February.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta00093b6mu9rd57dz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams and Wilmore first traveled to the International Space Station in early June aboard a Boeing Starliner spacecraft for what was expected to be a weeklong test mission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta000a3b6mnu4pxhfp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But issues with helium leaks and malfunctioning thrusters left engineers scrambling to figure out what went wrong \u2014 and NASA ultimately decided the Starliner\u2019s problems were not well enough understood for the space agency to allow Williams and Wilmore back on board.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta000b3b6mosqcn78d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Starliner instead flew home empty on September 6.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta000c3b6mia3ng5sc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After deciding not to return Williams and Wilmore to Earth on the Starliner, NASA opted instead to rearrange SpaceX\u2019s flight plans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/29\/science\/boeing-starliner-nasa-return-date-space-station\/index.html\">booting two other astronauts<\/a> \u2014 spaceflight veteran Stephanie Wilson and Zena Cardman, who was set to make her first trip to space \u2014 off the Crew-9 mission to make room for the Starliner team.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta000d3b6mudo7qbjs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that meant Williams and Wilmore would have to fulfill the duties of the original Crew-9 staff, taking up months\u2019 worth of routine work on the space station before their return trip.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta000e3b6mlcegw5cp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both Williams and Wilmore \u2014 veterans of earlier missions to the space station \u2014 have said they easily adjusted to the idea of staying in space until next year, with Williams noting the microgravity environment is her \u201chappy place.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1js7uta000f3b6m45yjguru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rounding out the staff currently on board the International Space Station are NASA\u2019s Don\u00a0Pettit and Aleksey Ovchinin and\u00a0Ivan Vagner of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.
