Meanwhile, Francis Ford Coppola\u2018s sci-fi epic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/megalopolis\/\" id=\"auto-tag_megalopolis\" data-tag=\"megalopolis\">Megalopolis<\/a>\u201d collapsed in its box office debut, collecting an anemic $4 million from 7,854 North American theaters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTicket sales for \u201cMegalopolis\u201d were less than initial projections of $5 million to $7 million, which would have been financially disastrous for the $120 million-budgeted film. By comparison, Kevin Costner\u2019s mostly self-funded $100 million-budgeted passion project \u201cHorizon: An American Saga \u2013 Part One\u201d arrived to $11 million over the summer before tapping out with $36 million worldwide. As a result, plans to release \u201cPart Two\u201d were indefinitely paused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith poor word of mouth (the film received a \u201cD+\u201d grade on CinemaScore), \u201cMegalopolis\u201d opened in sixth place behind three holdover titles and the Indian Telugu-language action film \u201cDevara: Part 1.\u201d Reviews have been wildly divisive with the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/26\/movies\/megalopolis-review-francis-ford-coppola.html\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/26\/movies\/megalopolis-review-francis-ford-coppola.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> calling the movie \u201cwonderfully out-there\u201d and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/megalopolis-movie-review-francis-ford-coppola-0fcb3389f343c771afb91bc47661e91e\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/megalopolis-movie-review-francis-ford-coppola-0fcb3389f343c771afb91bc47661e91e\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> saying it\u2019s \u201cnearly impossible to digest in a single, baffling viewing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe movie is an ambitious, personal vision. Sometimes a film like this beats the odds and makes a lot of money,\u201d says analyst David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.\u00a0\u201cThis one is not working. The result is going to be a big tax write-off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLionsgate released \u201cMegalopolis\u201d in the U.S. but isn\u2019t responsible for distribution or marketing costs. Instead its Coppola, the Oscar-winning director of \u201cThe Godfather\u201d trilogy and \u201cApocalypse Now,\u201d who self-funded the project and is on the hook for expenses. As part of promotional efforts, Lionsgate tried to riff on the movie\u2019s discord with a trailer that quoted well-known film critics who initially dismissed Coppola movies that went on to become classics. Set in a futuristic America, \u201cMegalopolis\u201d follows an architect (Adam Driver) who clashes with the corrupt mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) in determining how to rebuild the metropolis of New Rome after a disaster. The film also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight and Laurence Fishburne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis was never destined to be a box office hit and is the very definition of a passion project,\u201d says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. \u201cThat said, the film could enjoy long term interest from movie aficionados.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Wild Robot\u201d cost $78 million, so it hopes to enjoy the staying power that benefitted post-pandemic animated family films such as Pixar\u2019s \u201cElemental\u201d and Illumination\u2019s \u201cMigration,\u201d both of which parlayed positive sentiments into ticket sales in the months after their debuts. \u201cThe Wild Robot\u201d has been embraced by critics and audiences \u2014 it scored a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and \u201cA\u201d on CinemaScore \u2014 which bodes well for its theatrical run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhat a ridiculously satisfying opening weekend for \u2018The Wild Robot,&#8217;\u201d says Universal\u2019s president of domestic distribution Jim Orr. \u201cWe brought in audiences of all ages, and the audience scores were off the charts. Lupita Nyong\u2019o leads the movie\u2019s voice cast, playing a robot named Roz, who gets marooned on an uninhabited island and soon develops a bond with an orphaned gosling. Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Mark Hamill and Catherine O\u2019Hara voice animals who befriend Roz over the course of the film.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis is an excellent opening for a new animation film,\u201d says Gross. \u201cAnimation releases have been holding extremely well after opening, especially when they\u2019re received as enthusiastically as this. The movie should have a strong domestic run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith \u201cThe Wild Robot\u201d claiming the No. 1 spot, the three-time champion \u201cBeetlejuice Beetlejuice\u201d slid to second place. Tim Burton\u2019s spooky sequel enjoyed another strong outing, bringing in $16 million from 3,804 venues in its fourth weekend of release. The film has generated $250 million domestically and $373.3 million globally to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tParamount\u2019s animated \u201cTransformers One,\u201d starring Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry as young Optimus Prime and Megatron, dropped to the No. 3 spot. The movie earned $9.1 million from 3,970 locations, marking a steep 63% decline from its debut. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIndian Telugu-language action film \u201cDevara: Part 1\u2033 opened in fourth place, amassing an estimated $6.7 million from just 1,040 theaters. The three-hour film, starring \u201cRRR\u201d actor N. T. Rama Rao Jr\u00a0in dual roles, follows a man who finds out his brother is smuggling deadly weapons, turning the siblings into enemies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSpeak No Evil,\u201d Universal and Blumhouse\u2019s remake of the 2022 Danish horror thriller, rounded out the top five with $4.3 million from 2,661 theaters. That\u2019s a 27% decline from the weekend prior, a stellar hold for any film in its third weekend of release.
