Now it\u2019s clear why. <\/p>\n<p>The $120-million film, which Coppola financed with his own money, is on track to open with a disastrous $4 million in ticket sales this weekend from the U.S. and Canada, according to industry estimates, making it a epic flop for the legendary director known for the \u201cGodfather\u201d trilogy, \u201cApocalypse Now\u201d and \u201cThe Conversation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The 2 hr. 18 min. epic, a sort of retelling of Roman history through a satirical science fiction lens, has been an obsession of Coppola\u2019s for decades. He shouldered the financial risk himself, taking on the production budget plus marketing and distribution costs, selling off part of his wine business to make it happen. <\/p>\n<p>Coppola, 85, had proven doubters wrong before, pouring millions into the tumultuous production of \u201cApocalypse Now,\u201d which ended up nominated for the best picture Oscar and grossing more than <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt0078788\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$100 million worldwide<\/a>, according to Box Office Mojo. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMegalopolis\u201d premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May to a long standing ovation but mixed reviews, with some praising the scope and ambition and others calling it a jumbled mess. The Times\u2019 <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2024-05-16\/francis-ford-coppola-megalopolis-review-cannes-2024\">Joshua Rothkopf<\/a> compared its story to Tom Wolfe\u2019s \u201cThe Bonfire of the Vanities,\u201d \u201ca funhouse image of a clashing New York City riven by money, power and race.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The movie features a stacked cast, starring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight and Laurence Fishburne.<\/p>\n<p>But moviegoers who saw \u201cMegalopolis\u201d rejected it, giving is a devastating \u201cD+\u201d rating from audience polling firm CinemaScore. <\/p>\n<p>Lionsgate is distributing the movie for a fee, but is not carrying any of the financial risk (that\u2019s all on Coppola). Still, the Santa Monica studio suffered a headache from the promotional campaign when it released a trailer that included fake quotes from real critics doubting some of Coppola\u2019s classic past pictures. Lionsgate <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2024-09-05\/megalopolis-new-trailer-fake-quotes-controversy\">apologized<\/a> and pulled the trailer. <\/p>\n<p>Apart from \u201cMegalopolis,\u201d Lionsgate has fielded a number of bombs this year, including \u201cBorderlands\u201d and \u201cThe Crow.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrancis Ford Coppola is one of the world\u2019s greatest filmmakers and a cherished member of our creative family.
