Nvidia shares ended the day down 2.2% to $121 and fell further early Monday. Meanwhile, Chinese AI chipmaker Cambricon Technologies (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/688256.SS\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:688256.SS;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">688256.SS<\/a>) surged 20% in Monday trading.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia did not immediately respond to questions from Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the PHLX Semiconductor Index (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5ESOX\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:^SOX;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">^SOX<\/a>) dropped 1.2% early Monday. Nvidia rival Advanced Micro Devices (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/AMD\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:AMD;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AMD<\/a>) fell modestly, down 0.6% to about $163. Qualcomm (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/QCOM\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:QCOM;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">QCOM<\/a>) shares were flat, while Intel (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/INTC\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:INTC;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">INTC<\/a>) fell nearly 2% to around $23. Memory chipmaker and Nvidia partner Micron (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/MU\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:MU;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">MU<\/a>) fell 3.4% to about $104.<\/p>\n<p>The US enacted <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.doc.gov\/index.php\/documents\/about-bis\/newsroom\/press-releases\/3158-2022-10-07-bis-press-release-advanced-computing-and-semiconductor-manufacturing-controls-final\/file\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tougher export controls;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tougher export controls<\/a> on AI chips to China in late 2022 \u2014 and has continued to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.doc.gov\/index.php\/documents\/about-bis\/newsroom\/press-releases\/3355-2023-10-17-bis-press-release-acs-and-sme-rules-final-js\/file\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tighten;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tighten<\/a> those rules in an attempt to hinder China\u2019s ability to surge ahead in the so-called AI arms race. Nvidia has felt the impact: Sales to China made <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ix?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1045810\/000104581024000029\/nvda-20240128.htm\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:up 14% of data center revenue;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">up 14% of data center revenue<\/a> during the company\u2019s fiscal year ended Jan. 28, 2024, compared to 19% the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia has responded by attempting to work around those roadblocks by creating specific versions of its chips for China, which comply with the stricter controls.<\/p>\n<p>Its <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/tech-war-nvidias-h20-chip-093000938.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cH20\u201d Hopper chips;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">\u201cH20\u201d Hopper chips<\/a> for China launched this year \u2014 and are <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b76ef55b-21cd-498b-ac16-5660908bb8d2\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:forecast to generate $12 billion;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">forecast to generate $12 billion<\/a> in revenue for the company this year. Nvidia is also set to launch a version of its latest Blackwell chip, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/nvidia-preparing-version-new-flaghip-ai-chip-chinese-market-sources-say-2024-07-22\/\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:called \u201cB20,\u201d;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">called \u201cB20,\u201d<\/a> for China. Revenue from sales in China totaled about $3.7 billion in the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:17;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/nvidianews.nvidia.com\/news\/nvidia-announces-financial-results-for-second-quarter-fiscal-2025\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:most recent quarter;cpos:17;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">most recent quarter<\/a> ended July 28, up 33.8% from the prior year, according to Bloomberg estimates. Nvidia shares are up 144% since the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts remain bullish on Nvidia despite historic volatility in the semiconductor sector. About 90% of Wall Street analysts recommend buying the stock and see shares rising to $147.61 over the next year, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Newman, CEO of the Futurum Group, told Yahoo Finance that there is \u201cstrong optimism right now from the top leaders\u201d in the semiconductor sector.
