Israel has also assassinated several of the group\u2019s top commanders in recent days. Naim Kassem said in a televised statement that if Israel launches a ground offensive, the group\u2019s fighters are ready. He said the commanders killed have already been replaced.<\/p>\n<p>An airstrike early Monday hit an apartment building in central Beirut \u2014 the first to hit in the heart of the Lebanese capital in nearly a year of conflict \u2014 and killed three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a small, leftist Palestinian faction. Videos showed ambulances and a crowd gathered near the building on a busy, shop-lined thoroughfare in a mainly Sunni district.<\/p>\n<p>Another Israeli airstrike early Monday killed six people, including two sisters and a child, in central Gaza, Palestinian officials said.<\/p>\n<h2>___<\/h2>\n<p>Here is the latest:<\/p>\n<h2>Relatives fear an Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon will delay the release of hostages in Gaza<\/h2>\n<p>LONDON \u2014 Relatives of some of the Israelis held hostage by Hamas in Gaza say they fear Israel\u2019s strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon will further delay a deal that could lead to their loved ones\u2019 release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes away from the hostages,\u201d Sharone Lifschitz said during a news conference Monday in London. <\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cIf there is a ground incursion, then they are telling us nothing will happen for two weeks or three weeks or five weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lifschitz\u2019s parents were kidnapped when Hamas-backed militants raided southern Israel on Oct. 7. Her mother, Yocheved, was freed in November but her father, Oded, is still being held.<\/p>\n<p>Relatives of hostages with connections to the U.K. held a private meeting Monday with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy in hopes of increasing pressure for the hostages\u2019 release.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Brisley\u2019s sister Lianne Sharab and two nieces were killed by Hamas on Oct. 7, and his brother-in-law Eli Sharabi is a hostage. He says the Israeli government insists the hostages are its top priority, but \u201cthat\u2019s not the impression I get at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels shoot down another US-made MQ-9 Reaper drone<\/h2>\n<p>DUBAI, United Arab Emirates \u2014 Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels say they shot down another American-made MQ-9 Reaper drone over the country, with videos purportedly showing a surface-to-air missile striking it.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to queries from The Associated Press, the U.S. military acknowledged an MQ-9 was \u201cdowned but we have nothing additional to provide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attack comes as the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip approaches. The Houthis have targeted ships traveling through the Red Sea over the war as U.S.-led airstrikes pound their positions in Yemen. That has imperiled a waterway that typically sees $1 trillion of trade pass through it, as well as crucial shipments of aid to war-torn Sudan and Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis also continue to launch missiles targeting Israel, drawing retaliatory airstrikes from the Israelis this weekend on the port city of Hodeida.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthi-run broadcaster Al-Masirah claimed shooting down the MQ-9, hours after video footage circulated online showing the purported missile striking the aircraft over Yemen\u2019s Saada province. A single image online also appeared to show wreckage of the drone, with pieces resembling that of an MQ-9.<\/p>\n<h2>French foreign minister urges Israel to refrain from launching a ground offensive in Lebanon<\/h2>\n<p>BEIRUT \u2014 France\u2019s Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot has urged Israel to refrain from launching a ground offensive in Lebanon and to reach a cease-fire with the Lebanese group Hezbollah after nearly two weeks of escalating tit-for-tat strikes across Israel\u2019s northern border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is still hope, but there is little time left,\u201d Barrot said during a news conference in Beirut Monday, just hours after an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building in the heart of the Lebanese capital. \u201cI therefore urge Israel to refrain from any ground incursion and to cease fire.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He also urged Hezbollah to stop firing on Israel, saying it \u201cbears heavy responsibility in the current situation, given its choice to enter the conflict\u201d after ally Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7 deadly incursion into southern Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Barrot was in Lebanon to delivery medical aid and hospital equipment. <\/p>\n<p>He expressed solidarity with the Lebanese people, saying they are \u201ccaught in a war (they) did not choose,\u201d and said France will provide flights for any French nationals who want to leave Lebanon.<\/p>\n<h2>Bulgaria sends a plane to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon<\/h2>\n<p>SOFIA, Bulgaria \u2013 Bulgaria\u2019s foreign ministry says a government jet flew to Beirut on Monday to get the first group of its citizens out of Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, the ministry urged Bulgarians to suspend all trips to Lebanon and to leave the country immediately, given recent tensions in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The government in Sofia says it will prioritize families with children and vulnerable groups adding that another flight could be added, depending on the number willing to be evacuated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is necessary to act quickly, but the leading thing is the safety of the Bulgarian citizens \u2014 both those who wish to leave and the teams that will carry out the evacuation,\u201d Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said.<\/p>\n<h2>Syrian diplomat says Israeli strikes are escalating a regional crisis<\/h2>\n<p>UNITED NATIONS \u2014 Syria\u2019s top diplomat is warning the United Nations General Assembly that Israel\u2019s strikes in Lebanon, Gaza, the occupied Golan Heights and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-syria-strikes-hama-iran-hezbollah-916f12c8f1fae066439733c2c0ba9980\">his own country<\/a><\/span> are propelling the region to the edge of perilous \u201cescalation and confrontation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh spoke Monday on the final day of the assembly\u2019s <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/united-nations\">annual top-level meeting<\/a><\/span>. He accused the United States and other, unnamed nations of giving Israel \u201cimmunity, impunity, and unlimited support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis large-scale Israeli aggression, which is unfettered by any restrictions and limitations, is pushing the region to the brink of a dangerous escalation and confrontation whose consequences cannot be predicted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2>Netanyahu warns Iran \u2018there is nowhere in the Middle East Israel cannot reach\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>JERUSALEM \u2014 In a speech addressed to the Iranian people, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the Islamic Republic of subjugating its citizens and indicated the Israeli military is capable of assassinating Iran\u2019s leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, their (Iran\u2019s) puppets are eliminated. Ask Mohammed Deif. Ask Nasrallah,\u201d Netanyahu said. \u201cThere is nowhere in the Middle East Israel cannot reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was referring to the head of Hamas\u2019 military wing, who Israel says it killed in a July strike in Gaza, and the head of Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah group, Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in a strike on Friday. Hamas has not confirmed Deif\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past week, Israel has killed seven high-ranking Hezbollah commanders and officials. Iran, Hezbollah\u2019s main backer and sponsor, has vowed to retaliate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran\u2019s tyrants don\u2019t care about your future,\u201d Netanyahu said. \u201cWhen Iran is finally free, that moment will come a lot sooner than people think. Everything will be different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamas\u2019 political leader, Ismael Haniyeh, was assassinated in July in a strike on Tehran, and Iran blamed Israel. Israel has not confirmed or denied it was behind that killing.<\/p>\n<h2>Thousands displaced from Lebanon find shelter in a Damascus suburb<\/h2>\n<p>DAMASCUS, Syria \u2014 More than 5,000 displaced people are finding shelter in a suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus after fleeing Israeli airstrikes in neighboring Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>They are among tens of thousands who have crossed the border into Syria in the past two weeks as the fighting between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah group intensified, with Israel dramatically expanding its aerial campaign across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The overcrowded suburb called Sayyida Zeinab has welcome the displaced, offering them hotel rooms and other accommodation. The Shiite militant Hezbollah group, which fought alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad during Syria\u2019s civil war, maintains a strong presence in the predominantly Shiite Muslim suburb.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lebanon-israel-syria-refugees-displaced-8a1fbde03c81fb3672e27d479f5b5a34\">cross-border flow<\/a><\/span> was a striking reversal in fortunes given that Lebanon is still hosting more than one million Syrian refugees who fled the war in their country that began in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation in Lebanon is tragic,\u201d said Futoon Abbas, a displaced Lebanese woman from the eastern city of Baalbek that has been at the receiving end of heavy Israeli bombardment the past few days. \u201cIt was by the mercy of God that we got here,\u201d she said, adding the road was very dangerous.<\/p>\n<h2>Blinken says US is working to de-escalate the conflict <\/h2>\n<p>WASHINGTON &#8212; Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Hezbollah\u2019s leader killed in a recent Israeli airstrike a \u201cbrutal terrorist\u201d but says the U.S. will keep working on de-scalating the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden similarly said over the weekend that Hezbollah leader <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/obituary-nasrallah-lebanon-israel-2da3789a02fd4e2e88511a7f59174d19\">Hassan Nasrallah<\/a><\/span> \u2019s death was a \u201cmeasure of justice\u201d for thousands of Americans, Israelis and Lebanese victims of a four-decade \u201creign of terror.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Biden said an all-out war in the Middle East must be avoided and that he would speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but didn\u2019t say when. <\/p>\n<p>Blinken, speaking Monday at the opening of a meeting of foreign ministers in a global coalition to defeat the Islamic State group, said the U.S. is working with partners on a diplomatic resolution to ensure security for Israel and Lebanon and allow people driven from their homes along the border by months of rocket strikes to return.<\/p>\n<p>He says the U.S. is still working on a cease-fire and hostage release deal in Gaza, an effort that has stalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiplomacy remains the best and only path to achieving greater stability in the Middle East,\u201d Blinken said.<\/p>\n<h2>German military plane lands in Beirut<\/h2>\n<p>BERLIN \u2013 The government in Berlin says a German military plane flew to Beirut on Monday to help get diplomats\u2019 relatives and others out of Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Germany has been calling on its citizens to leave Lebanon since October 2023. Over the weekend, the Foreign Ministry raised the alert level for its diplomatic missions in Beirut, Tel Aviv and Ramallah, calling for relatives of German employees and nonessential staff to leave.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign and defense ministries said a German air force jet flew to Beirut to support the effort to get them and others out of Lebanon. They said the plane also will fly out German citizens who are \u201cparticularly endangered,\u201d particularly by medical issues.<\/p>\n<p>The ministries said the German Embassy in Beirut will continue to support German citizens in leaving Lebanon on commercial flights and by other means.<\/p>\n<h2>A Lebanese army soldier dies in an airstrike <\/h2>\n<p>BEIRUT \u2014 A Lebanese soldier was killed Monday when a motorcycle was targeted by an Israeli airstrike as it crossed an army checkpoint in the southern area of Wazzani, the Lebanese army said. <\/p>\n<p>At least 12 Lebanese army soldiers have been killed and 20 injured \u2014 most of them off duty and in their homes \u2014 since the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began nearly a year ago, said a Lebanese security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn\u2019t authorized to speak to reporters.<\/p>\n<p>The Lebanese army, which has a limited arsenal and has been struggling to maintain its forces and equipment due to a protracted economic crisis, has so far stood on the sidelines in the fighting. We will use all the capabilities we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cIf someone on the other side did not understand what the capabilities mean, it is all capabilities, and you are part of this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Israeli airstrike kills 6 people, including 2 sisters and a child, in Gaza<\/h2>\n<p>DEIR -AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip \u2014 Palestinian medical officials say an Israeli airstrike killed six people, including two sisters and a child, in central Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The strike early Monday hit a family home in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp, according to the Awda hospital, where the casualties were taken.<\/p>\n<p>The dead include a man, his two daughters and a grandchild, according to the hospital records.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Monday, an Israeli strike hit a house in the central town of Deir al-Balah, killing two children and their parents.<\/p>\n<p>Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian casualties on Hamas because the militant group operates in residential areas. The military rarely comments on individual strikes, which often kill women and children.<\/p>\n<p>Gaza\u2019s Health Ministry says at least 41,615 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war.
