Read our guide on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\"><u>how to observe the sun safely<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-watch-the-quot-ring-of-fire-quot-eclipse-xa0-3\">When to watch the &#8220;ring of fire&#8221; eclipse\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The first location to see the partial phase of the annular eclipse begin will be at 11:43 a.m. EDT (1543 GMT), <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2024-october-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2024-october-2\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>according to timeanddate.com<\/u><\/a>, the first location to see the annular phase of the eclipse begin will be at 12:50 p.m. EDT (1650 GMT) and the first location to see the maximum eclipse will occur at 2:45 p.m. EDT (1845 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>However, the best time to watch livestreams will be from 3:03 to 3:09 p.m. EDT (1903 to 1909 GMT), when the ring of fire will be seen for up to 6 minutes, 11 seconds from Easter Island\/Rapa Nui. moon<\/u><\/a>. The moon&#8217;s orbit of Earth is slightly elliptical, so the distance between the two changes slightly throughout the moon&#8217;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p>If the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\"><u>moon<\/u><\/a> is large enough in the sky to cover all of the sun, it causes a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41552-total-solar-eclipse-2024-guide.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41552-total-solar-eclipse-2024-guide.html\"><u>total solar eclipse<\/u><\/a>. When that happens, it projects a very narrow shadow across <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\"><u>Earth<\/u><\/a>, creating a path of totality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not what&#8217;s occurring on Oct. 2, though, when the moon will be a little farther away in its orbit, so it won&#8217;t completely cover the sun.
