{"id":109180,"date":"2024-10-01T16:43:56","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T09:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=109180"},"modified":"2024-10-01T16:43:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T09:43:56","slug":"fda-approved-antidepressant-treats-incurable-brain-cancer-in-preclinical-trial-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=109180","title":{"rendered":"FDA-Approved Antidepressant Treats Incurable Brain Cancer in Preclinical Trial : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A widely available and inexpensive antidepressant drug may soon save lives from an altogether different kind of disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growth of the most aggressive and deadly brain cancer, glioblastoma, was effectively suppressed in both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ex vivo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> human tissue samples and in living mice by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an FDA approved <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serotonin_modulator_and_stimulator\">serotonin modulator<\/a> currently used to treat major depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not a cure, but it may offer some relief and constitute an effective part of a treatment regime for glioblastoma patients. Human clinical trials are the next step; patients are cautioned against self-medicating at this stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The advantage of vortioxetine is that it is safe and very cost-effective,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en\/news-and-events\/eth-news\/news\/2024\/09\/antidepressant-shows-promise-for-treating-brain-tumours.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says neurologist Michael Weller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland. &#8220;As the drug has already been approved, it doesn&#8217;t have to undergo a complex approval procedure and could soon supplement the standard therapy for this deadly brain tumor.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glioblastoma is rare, but when it strikes, it&#8217;s hard to defeat. The tumor typically appears on the brain or <a href=\"https:\/\/braintumorcenter.ucsf.edu\/condition\/brainstem-glioma\">brain stem<\/a>, growing quickly and aggressively. There&#8217;s currently no cure, meaning it&#8217;s usually fatal, claiming around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470003\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95 percent of patients within five years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Treatment usually involves radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/brain-tumours\/types\/glioblastoma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sometimes surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to try and remove as much of the tumor as is safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A noninvasive treatment that can complement existing interventions to improve outcomes is something doctors would love to have, but since few cancer drugs can cross the blood-brain barrier options are limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Led by molecular biologist Sohyon Lee of ETH Zurich, a team of researchers <\/span>used cultivated human tissue grown from samples donated by glioblastoma patients undergoing treatment surgery, to see <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if any existing drugs might be effective at suppressing the growth of cancer cells. They focused primarily on antidepressant drugs, antipsychotics, and drugs used to treat Parkinson&#8217;s disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In all, they tested 132 drugs on tissue cultivated from 27 glioblastoma patients, cataloging more than 2,500 drug responses. And they found, surprisingly, that some antidepressant drugs were effective at suppressing the development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencealert.com\/cancer\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73077\" data-postid=\"139637\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">cancer<\/a> cells, including a serotoni<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n modulator called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vortioxetine\">vortioxetine<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of vortioxetine&#8217;s actions is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.montclair.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1270&amp;context=psychology-facpubs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activate signaling cascades<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a series of reactions in a cell initiated by a stimulus. These cascades suppress cell division, which is the way cancers grow and spread. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computer simulations revealed that the simultaneous cascade of neural cells and cancer cells was necessary to inhibit the cancer, which was why only some of the antidepressants were effective \u2013 they don&#8217;t all work quite the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step was to test the drugs in a living, breathing system: mice with glioblastoma. Mice were transplanted with glioblastoma tumors, and then assigned a group. The control group was left untreated, while a second group of mice was treated with the SSRI antidepressant citalopram. Med.<\/em><\/a>, 2024)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparisons 38 days after implantation of the tumor revealed the vortioxetine treatment group had significantly less tumor growth and invasiveness than the control and citalopram groups, which displayed similar outcomes to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a follow-up experiment, another sample of glioblastoma mice was treated with standard chemotherapy drugs.
