People caught with the drugs without a valid prescription could face up to five years in prison, although pregnant women who procure it for their own use are exempted from punishment under the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Although the drugs are typically used in US medication abortions, they are also regularly used in an array of other circumstances, such as to help with miscarriage management, treat ulcers and soften the cervix during labor and other procedures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Normally, at the Louisiana hospital where OB-GYN Dr Nicole Freehill works, misoprostol is kept in so-called<strong> <\/strong>hemorrhage carts, which can be easily wheeled into the rooms where patients deliver babies and which carry medications normally used to treat hemorrhaging,<strong> <\/strong><strong> <\/strong>including misoprostol. It takes about 15 seconds to pull the misoprostol out of the cart, Freehill said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Now, due to the security requirements placed on schedule IV drugs, the hospital must keep misoprostol stocked outside of patients\u2019 rooms. When the hospital ran a drill to see how long it took nurses to grab the misoprostol under the new rules, it took nurses two minutes, Freehill said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cA lot of people might go: \u2018Oh, two minutes, that\u2019s really fast.\u2019 And yes, in the long scheme of things, that\u2019s fast. But when you have someone who is actively hemorrhaging \u2013 in two minutes, they can lose hundreds of cc\u2019s of blood,\u201d Freehill said. \u201cSo those seconds count. I\u2019m definitely worried about what\u2019s going to happen to patients who are hemorrhaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Compared to other wealthy nations, the United States already has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/article\/2024\/jun\/05\/maternal-mortality-rate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">far higher maternal mortality rate<\/a>, particularly among Black Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Before the law\u2019s passage, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rosiewestwood\/status\/1788281803532300710\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">more than 200 doctors wrote a letter<\/a> to the state legislator behind the law, asking him to reconsider it. \u201cControlled substances require more complex coordination by pharmacists, patients and providers, with increased documentation and often longer waits for patients,\u201d they wrote. \u201cOverall, this results in fear and confusion among patients, doctors, and pharmacists, which delays care and worsens outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In the two years since the US supreme court overturned Roe v Wade, more than a dozen states, including Louisiana, have banned almost all abortions. However, the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/oct\/24\/us-abortion-rates-post-roe-v-wade\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">abortions performed in US clinics rose<\/a>, as did the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/mar\/25\/self-managed-abortions-avoid-bans\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">number of self-induced abortions<\/a> using pills. (Self-managed abortions are usually safe and effective in the first trimester of pregnancy.)
