Having made its closest approach to the sun at the end of last month, it is expected to do the same to Earth around 13 October.

<gu-island name="RichLinkComponent" priority="feature" deferuntil="idle" props="{"richLinkIndex":5,"element":{"_type":"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement","prefix":"Related: ","text":"Starwatch: Pisces emerges in the eastern sky as the nights lengthen","elementId":"f0c50733-ae91-47ea-9cff-5090d790a74c","role":"richLink","url":"https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/sep/30/starwatch-pisces-emerges-in-the-eastern-sky-as-the-nights-lengthen"},"ajaxUrl":"https://api.nextgen.guardianapps.co.uk","format":{"display":0,"theme":0,"design":0}}"/>

“The thing about comets is that the closer that they are to us, to the Earth, the brighter they are, but also the closer they are to the sun, the brighter they are. As a result, said Brown, the best time to look for it will be a few days before and after.

“Naked-eye-visible comets are rare enough as it is, and this one has the potential to be amongst the brightest that we’ve seen in the last few decades.
