The company announced in September that CEO John Donahoe would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/19\/nike-ceo-john-donahoe-is-out-replaced-by-elliott-hill.html\">stepping down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what analysts are expecting from the world&#8217;s largest sneaker company for its fiscal first quarter of 2025, according to consensus estimates from LSEG:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Earnings per share: <\/strong>52 cents<\/li>\n<li><strong>Revenue: <\/strong>$11.65 billion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Analysts are expecting sales to drop 10% from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/28\/nike-nke-earnings-q1-2024.html\">year-ago period<\/a> and profits to plunge by nearly 45%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The grim outlook comes amid a reset at Nike. Over the last year, it&#8217;s been accused of falling behind on innovation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/06\/27\/nike-nke-earnings-q4-2024.html\">ceding share to competitors<\/a> as it focused on selling directly to consumers through its own websites and stores rather than through wholesalers such as <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/FL\/\">Foot Locker<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DBI\/\">DSW<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In September, Nike announced that Donahoe would be stepping down and would be replaced by company veteran Elliott Hill, who is scheduled to take the helm Oct. 14.<\/p>\n<p>Under Donahoe&#8217;s leadership, the company grew annual sales by more than 31%, but it got there by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/06\/28\/nike-ceo-john-donahoe-under-fire-from-wall-street.html\">churning out legacy franchises<\/a> such as Air Force 1s, Dunks and Air Jordan 1s \u2014 not the groundbreaking styles that turned the company into a global powerhouse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the last few quarters, Donahoe has spoken about the need to improve innovation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/04\/12\/nike-ceo-acknowledges-it-went-too-far-in-direct-push.html#:~:text=Retail-,Nike%20CEO%20says%20focus%20on%20its%20own%20website%20and%20stores,it%20embraces%20wholesale%20retailers%20again&amp;text=Nike%20CEO%20John%20Donahoe%20acknowledged,its%20own%20stores%20and%20website.\">mend Nike&#8217;s relationships<\/a> with wholesalers, but the company&#8217;s board decided that Hill, who spent 32 years with Nike before retiring in 2020, would be the right person to lead its next chapter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Donahoe is expected to be present during the company&#8217;s conference call with investors Tuesday afternoon, but observers will be keen to see if there are any clues into where the company is planning to go under Hill&#8217;s leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The incoming CEO will need to power up Nike&#8217;s innovation pipeline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/23\/how-foot-locker-is-waging-a-comeback-after-its-breakup-with-nike.html\">reset its relationships<\/a> with wholesalers and improve morale after a series of layoffs and a breakdown in culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the sneaker market has been relatively stagnant in the U.S. Consumer spending on discretionary goods such as new clothes and shoes has been sluggish, which has made Nike&#8217;s situation that much more difficult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Footwear sales in the U.S. are projected to grow by just 2% in 2024 compared with 2023 after barely budging between 2022 and 2023, according to Euromonitor. Athletic footwear is expected to grow by about 5.6%, the firm said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nike&#8217;s performance has also been weighed down by the uneven economy in China, Nike&#8217;s third-largest market by revenue, which will be another key item to watch for in the earnings report. Nike&#8217;s performance in China is often an indicator of the region&#8217;s financial health, and in late June, it warned of a &#8220;softer outlook&#8221; in the region.
