JD Vance, R-Ohio, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz take the stage in New York City for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/vance-preps-vp-debate-help-wife-advisers-minnesota-stand-walz-rcna172237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuesday night\u2019s vice presidential debate<\/a>, it will be their first in-person meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/donald-trump-jd-vance-relationship-rcna171181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/tim-walz-kamala-harris-vp-blue-wall-rcna163436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walz<\/a> have been nipping at each other from afar for weeks, playing the customary role of attack dog on opposing tickets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The stakes for their 90-minute debate, hosted by CBS News and scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET, are unusually high for an undercard clash. The race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is tight nationally and in the battleground states, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/poll-newly-popular-harris-challenging-trump-change-rcna171308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent polling<\/a>. Given that Trump hasn\u2019t agreed to a second showdown with Harris, Vance vs. Walz could very well be the last debate before Election Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/live-blog\/vice-presidential-debate-vance-walz-live-updates-rcna172846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Follow live updates on the vice presidential debate<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Polls also indicate that Vance has some work to do after he made a rough first impression. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25171447-240405-nbc-september-2024-poll_922-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News national poll<\/a>, 45% of registered voters said they viewed Vance negatively, compared with 32% who said they viewed him positively \u2014 making him one of the least-liked vice presidential candidates in the last 30 years. Walz, conversely, was viewed positively by 40% and negatively by 33%. And with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/misinformation\/jd-vance-ohio-police-no-reports-haitian-immigrants-harming-pets-rcna170271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unsubstantiated claims<\/a> about Haitian immigrants\u2019 eating pets and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/donald-trump-jd-vance-relationship-rcna171181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tendency to get ahead of Trump<\/a> on policy, Vance already has drawn more scrutiny than any vice presidential candidate since another Republican, then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, burst onto the scene in 2008.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With all that in mind, here are a few things to watch for as Vance and Walz face off in New York:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">Does Walz win the expectations game?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">When Harris tapped Walz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/-are-underdogs-harris-introduces-running-mate-walz-coach-veteran-prote-rcna165350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at a rally in Philadelphia in early August<\/a>, he sounded jazzed at the prospect of going up against Vance on a debate stage this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI can\u2019t wait to debate the guy,\u201d Walz said, before he alluded to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/democrats-false-jd-vance-couch-trump-misinformation-rcna166155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vulgar false claim<\/a> made about Vance online. \u201cThat is, if he\u2019s willing to get off the couch and show up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Less than two months later, Walz and his allies have been seeking to temper expectations about his own performance while trying to raise them for his opponent, highlighting Vance\u2019s Yale Law School pedigree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cLook, he\u2019s [a] Yale Law guy,\u201d Walz said on MSNBC after the Trump-Harris debate last month. \u201cI\u2019m a public school teacher. I fully expect that Sen. Vance, as a United States senator, a Yale Law guy, he will come well-prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s a tale as old as time: Candidates and their campaigns seek to make their opponents sound more formidable ahead of debates, trying to boost the impact of great performances and blunt the force of disappointments. Case in point: The Trump team has been seeking to raise expectations for Walz\u2019s performance, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWalz is very good in debates,\u201d Jason Miller, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said Monday on a call with reporters. \u201cI want to repeat that. Tim Walz is very good in debates. Really good. He\u2019s been a politician for nearly 20 years. He\u2019ll be very well-prepared for tomorrow night.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">The race card<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAre you a racist?\u201d Vance, pointing at the camera with a smirk, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K3qYJoSV0lI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked in an ad<\/a> his campaign aired in the early days of his successful Senate bid two years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The question was Vance\u2019s attempt at rhetorical sarcasm \u2014 and it has framed a guiding thesis in his young political career: that you can be angry about U.S. immigration policy and border security without being a racist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">More recently, Vance has dabbled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-fringe-online-claim-immigrants-eating-pets-debate-trump-rcna170759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the debunked rumor<\/a> about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. That raises the possibility that, onstage Tuesday, Walz will flip a variation of Vance\u2019s question back on him: Is <em>he<\/em> a racist?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Vance is prepared for such a scenario.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">His advisers frequently talk about how he handled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2022-election\/tim-ryan-jd-vance-attack-great-replacement-theory-final-ohio-senate-de-rcna52621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tense debate situation in 2022<\/a>, when his Democratic opponent in the Senate race, then-Rep. Tim Ryan, accused him of embracing racist conspiracy theories. Vance quickly pivoted to his three biracial children \u2014 his wife, Usha, is Indian American. Vance bemoaned how his family had been \u201cattacked by scumbags online and in person, because you are so desperate for political power that you\u2019ll accuse me, the father of three beautiful biracial babies, of engaging in racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Usha Vance was among the small group who helped Vance prepare for the debate.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">The battle for men and a fight over the future of masculinity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Both the Trump and the Harris campaigns are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trump-harris-battle-male-voters-masculinity-2024-rcna173031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeting a group of voters who could make the difference<\/a> in whether they win the White House in November: young men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Both Walz and Vance have been at the forefront of this fight. For Walz, that has involved his and the Harris campaign\u2019s heavily promoting his background as a high school football coach, hunter and Midwestern fixer-upper dad. For Vance, who would be the youngest man to serve as vice president in generations, it\u2019s about his familiarity with many of the online spaces dominated by younger men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trump-harris-battle-male-voters-masculinity-2024-rcna173031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">They offer competing visions of masculinity<\/a>, whether it\u2019s Walz\u2019s vision of a traditional masculinity combined with his support for LGBTQ rights and his comfort in talking about reproductive issues or Vance\u2019s ideas around manhood as outlined in his memoir and in how he promotes family formation. It has been the subject of attacks on each of them. Vance has been tagged as weird, while Walz has been mocked for his mannerisms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe\u2019s not going to be the wildly gesticulating, effeminate caricature we see at rallies pointing to Kamala Harris and dancing about on the stage,\u201d Miller said on Monday\u2019s call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Expect the concept of manhood \u2014 and how Walz and Vance have different ideas of what that means \u2014 to be an undercurrent in their messaging.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">The crossover appeals<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Walz was known as a moderate congressman representing a swingy district before he carved out a more progressive identity as governor. As a candidate for vice president, he presents as a mainstream Midwesterner who enjoys Middle America pastimes. The Harris campaign clearly sees him as someone who can speak to heartland voters who have ditched the Democrats in recent cycles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Vance isn\u2019t far removed from his days as an anti-Trump pundit, but his hard-right turn toward Trump has been unbending. Vance is more likely to cast aspersions on any such attempt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., who played Walz in Vance\u2019s debate prep, has compared his state\u2019s governor to the liberal governor of California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAmericans,\u201d Emmer told reporters on a Trump campaign call Monday, \u201cwill start to see what we\u2019ve long known in Minnesota: that Tim Walz is nothing more than Gavin Newsom in a flannel shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">Does Vance\u2019s performance \u2014\u00a0good or bad \u2014\u00a0encourage Trump to change his mind about another debate?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Trump has said he won\u2019t be doing any more debates with Harris, noting that early voting is already underway. Harris, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/21\/harris-agrees-to-potential-cnn-debate-with-trump-on-oct-23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has committed<\/a> to a debate with CNN on Oct. 23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But will Trump change his mind? Vance\u2019s performance could play a big role in whether he does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If Vance performs well and generates positive buzz for the campaign, a jealous Trump might decide he wants another crack at the debate spotlight. If Vance performs poorly, Trump might feel he has no choice but to debate again.
