Here are the striking workers&#8217; salaries."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Roughly 25,000 <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/east-coast-port-strike-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">striking dockworkers<\/a><\/span>\u00a0at ports along the East and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. are rallying for higher pay and stronger guardrails around their jobs being automated out of existence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Members of the International Longshoremen&#8217;s Association, or ILA, a union representing the dockworkers, walked off the job Tuesday\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/port-strike-east-and-gulf-coast-dockworkers-international-longshoremens-association\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">for the first time<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in nearly 50 years as they push for &#8220;the kind of wages we deserve,&#8221; ILA President Harold Daggett said in a social media post on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those wages, union officials argue, should factor in the torrid inflation that eroded dockworkers&#8217; paychecks under their now lapsed labor contract with the United States Maritime Alliance, known as USMX, which represents ports and ocean carriers. As the industry profits, longshore workers &#8220;continue to be crippled by inflation due to USMX&#8217;s unfair wage packages,&#8221; the ILA said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ilaunion.org\/ila-update-monday-september-30-2024-at-11-am\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>How much do longshoremen make?<\/h2>\n<p>Only workers at 14\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/port-workers-strike-east-coast-dockworkers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">East and Gulf Coast ports are on strike<\/a><\/span>; West Coast longshoremen are represented by a different union, which negotiated significant wage increases for its members in 2023. ILA members earn significantly less than their peers on the other side of the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pay for longshoremen is based on their years of experience. Under the ILA&#8217;s former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ilaunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Master-Contract-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">contract<\/a>\u00a0with USMX, which expired on Monday, starting pay for dockworkers was $20 per hour. That rose to $24.75 per hour after two years on the job and to $31.90 after three years, topping out at $39 for workers with at least six years of service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The union is demanding a 77% raise over six years, or the equivalent of a $5 increase per hour for each year of the contract. Under the union&#8217;s proposal, workers would make $44 for the first year of the contract, $49 for the second and up to $69 in its final year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think this work group has a lot of bargaining power,&#8221; said Harry Katz, a professor of collective bargaining at Cornell University. &#8220;They&#8217;re essential workers that can&#8217;t be replaced, and also the ports are doing well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s a typical annual salary?<\/h2>\n<p>That top-tier hourly wage of $39 amounts to just over $81,000 annually, but dockworkers can make significantly more by taking on extra shifts. For example, according to a 2019-20 annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcnyh.gov\/docs\/2019-2020_WCNYH_Annual_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> from the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, about one-third of local longshoremen made $200,000 or more a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/port-strike-has-thousands-of-dockworkers-on-the-picket-lines\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">Port strike has thousands of dockworkers on the picket lines<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">02:52<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A more typical longshoreman&#8217;s salary can exceed $100,000, but not without logging substantial overtime hours.
