Vance repeatedly hit Vice President Kamala Harris on border security, while Walz lambasted former President Donald Trump on abortion rights.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8ybq3000v3b6mxdb9101a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance was the Republican ticket\u2019s younger face and more polite voice. Unlike Trump, he pronounced Harris\u2019 first name correctly. He referred to his opponent by his title. He didn\u2019t often whine about the moderators \u2013 though Trump did so during the debate on his Truth Social platform. The Ohio senator also largely passed on opportunities to litigate the details of Walz\u2019s own biography.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8ye3c000x3b6mfr5ehs4u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walz \u2013 who was noticeably less comfortable onstage than Vance \u2013 settled in after a nervous start. He cast Trump as a liar who ignores experts and rejects truths he finds unfavorable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9wzns00233b6mujuk85pr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The debate was almost entirely focused on domestic issues. CBS moderators opened with a question about the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, but did not ask about the United States\u2019 support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rao8ny002n3b6mg2qrqrx6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unusually normal debate ended with another refreshingly normal moment \u2013 the kind that hasn\u2019t been seen over the past decade of presidential debates. The candidates shook hands and chatted away from the microphones, and lingered as their wives joined them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8y5nb000c3b6m5zlt8kad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here are seven takeaways from the first and only scheduled vice presidential debate of the 2024 election:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w700253b6mchdlq4av@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The clearest divide of the night came when Walz put Vance on the spot during a discussion of the January 6, 2021, insurrection and Trump\u2019s false claims that he won the 2020 election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w700263b6mm16dyphm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDid he lose the 2020 election?\u201d Walz asked Vance, attempting to force the Ohio senator to acknowledge a reality that Trump himself won\u2019t.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w700273b6mmm3lo59f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTim, I\u2019m focused on the future,\u201d was how Vance began his response.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w700283b6mjf0zqdn7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat is a damning nonanswer,\u201d Walz shot back.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w700293b6m10oobxi2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance tried to sidestep the violent attack by Trump supporters on the US Capitol on the day Congress was gathering to officially count Electoral College votes and certify Joe Biden\u2019s victory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w7002a3b6m1qi8vhjw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOn January 6, what happened? Joe Biden became president; Donald Trump left the White House,\u201d Vance said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc9057003f3b6maw6egonm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Ohio senator, attempting to argue that Trump\u2019s actions in 2020 were not unusual, pointed to Democratic complaints about Russian interference in the 2016 election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rchefn003v3b6mj3bm9hof@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHillary Clinton in 2016 said that Donald Trump had the election stolen by Vladimir Putin because the Russians bought like $500,000 worth of Facebook ads,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rchefn003w3b6mw5zy9k3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike Trump, Clinton conceded the 2016 election, and did not attempt to interfere with the counting of electoral votes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rchefn003x3b6mjqncz0jo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJanuary 6 was not Facebook ads,\u201d Walz said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w7002b3b6mqx5e79uw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walz, though, drilled into the details of the costs of Trump\u2019s efforts to overturn the election results.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w7002c3b6m3f9q16cv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe lost this election, and he said he didn\u2019t. One hundred and forty police officers were beaten at the Capitol that day, some with the American flag, and several later died,\u201d he said. \u201cThe democracy is bigger than winning an election.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w7002d3b6mqafkqvoe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance tried to redirect the discussion of democracy into a debate about social media censorship. But each time he tried, Walz pushed back, arguing that Trump was already laying the groundwork to reject the outcome of the 2024 race if he loses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9x2w7002e3b6mf2llklua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHere we are four years later, in the same boat,\u201d Walz said. \u201cThe winner needs to be the winner. This has got to stop. It\u2019s tearing our country apart.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rap5j4002s3b6msgl65rbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In many ways, this vice presidential debate reflected the way typical Americans argue about contentious issues.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rap5j4002t3b6mnnojbtkq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There was no name-calling, few canned zingers and a clear directive for both Vance and Walz not to get personal \u2013 unless they were aggressively agreeing that the issues were, in fact, issues. The housing crisis, they agreed, was a crisis. Gun violence, both said, needed to be reduced.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rap5j4002u3b6mpnzv247a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead of jousting among themselves, Vance and Walz behaved agreeably in the service of trying to depict the respective presidential candidates as uniquely divisive or misguided.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rap5j4002y3b6m11wjkwaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI agree with a lot of what Sen. Vance said about what\u2019s happening \u2013 his running mate, though, does not,\u201d Walz said when the debate turned to abortion. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the problem.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rap5j4002z3b6mr2njqiae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even after Walz rejected Vance\u2019s claim that housing prices were being driven up by undocumented immigrants, the Republican offered his rival some kind words.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rap5j400303b6myndg62hn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTim just mentioned a bunch of ideas. Now some of those ideas I actually think are halfway decent, and some of them I disagree with,\u201d Vance said, before regaining his focus and adding,\u00a0\u201cBut the most important thing here is: Kamala Harris is not running as a newcomer to politics. Mike DeWine, a Republican, dispatched state troopers to Springfield to ensure the safety of children after a series of bomb threats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8y5nb000g3b6m17mwvf28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance shot back, \u201cThe people I care most about in Springfield are the American citizens.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8y5nb000h3b6m3iypodhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the Ohio city and others like it, Vance said, because of an influx of migrants, \u201cyou\u2019ve got schools that are overwhelmed, you\u2019ve got hospitals that are overwhelmed, you\u2019ve got housing that is totally unaffordable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8y5nb000i3b6m00pblxen@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What Vance didn\u2019t say: The 12,000 to 15,000 Haitian migrants in Springfield are in the United States legally.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8y5nb000j3b6mg6cz9tzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Walz didn\u2019t fact-check Vance on that matter. And when he didn\u2019t, CBS moderator Margaret Brennan explained those immigrants\u2019 legal status.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r8y5nb000k3b6m9zbbm8h1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The clash over Springfield came during a lengthy back-and-forth over immigration policy. Vance repeatedly referred to Harris as President Joe Biden\u2019s \u201cborder czar,\u201d a label that refers to her 2021 assignment to tackle the root causes of migration from Central American countries. That was the core of the debate between Walz and Vance on abortion rights.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcns4m00453b6mcc64y7iv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both candidates, of course, came prepared to discuss the issue. What was striking, though, was the clarity on both ends.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcns4m00463b6mz817sne9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance argued that because the US is such a diverse country in so many ways, the rulemaking should be devolved as much as possible \u2013 to the states, in his view.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcns4m00473b6mffghb9h8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have a big country and it\u2019s diverse and California has a different viewpoint on this than Georgia,\u201d Vance said, stating a position that Trump has been less than clear about. (Trump on social confirmed during the VP debate what he\u2019d demurred on in his own, saying now that he would veto a national abortion ban.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcns4m00483b6m5t6tapp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe states will decide what\u2019s right for Texas might not be right for Washington? That\u2019s not how this works,\u201d Walz said. \u201cThis is basic human rights. We have seen maternal mortality skyrocket in Texas (since its restrictions went into effect), outpacing many accounts in the world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcns4m00493b6mg8ks4fjd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Vance, who spent most of the night on the front foot, was more cautious during this exchange. Plainly appealing to swing voters\u2019 concerns, he said \u2013 as many anti-abortion advocates have promised \u2013 that the Republican Party needs to do a better job of advancing \u201cpro-family\u201d policies, including access to fertility treatments and make housing more affordable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcns4m004a3b6mfkf97vv8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For his part, Walz was repeatedly asked to respond to a false assertion from Trump that the Minnesota governor supports abortion in the ninth month. In one of his stronger moments of the night, Walz brought up the personal stories of women who faced health crises or died due to state abortion bans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcns4m004b3b6my48wr8yb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn Minnesota, what we did was restore Roe v. Wade,\u201d Walz said. \u201cWe made sure that we put women in charge of their health care.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rcmkmj00403b6m1yzpi9ax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The governor incorrectly claimed the Trump campaign and the conservative Heritage Foundation\u2019s Project 2025 would create a \u201cregistry of pregnancies.\u201d The organization\u2019s proposal would require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collect data on abortions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9eles001g3b6mtcch41xf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance was asked if the Trump campaign wants to create a \u201cfederal pregnancy monitoring agency,\u201d referencing another past claim by Walz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9eles001h3b6mbg7gnqx5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCertainly we won\u2019t,\u201d Vance said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001o3b6mcd44ss81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance and Walz had something approaching a constructive conversation about gun violence in America, agreeing that it is bad, getting worse and needs to be addressed \u2013 especially in schools.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001p3b6mwe1ycw9l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That this bears noting underscores just how fruitless past Democratic-led efforts have been in stemming the bloody tide. But the question of how to deal with it, despite the friendly nods between the two onstage, remained unresolved.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001q3b6m9tu4bv1y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance at one point even suggested that the current administration\u2019s border policy (or, as he put it, \u201cKamala Harris\u2019 open border\u201d) was a driving factor \u2013 a non sequitur given the length and depth of the crisis. He did, however, also acknowledge it was a more complicated issue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001r3b6mbaojo6xz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walz mostly agreed with that sentiment but fought to keep the conversation from turning into a stalemate. When Vance pointed to mental health and drug use as another cause of gun deaths, Walz sought to refocus the conversation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001s3b6mgbgpesmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSometimes it just is the guns,\u201d Walz said. \u201cIt\u2019s just the guns.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001t3b6mpk0zzitw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Minnesota governor agreed that lawmakers \u201cshould look at all the issues\u201d\u00a0but stopped there to add a line of caution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001u3b6mk6mlm3jb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis idea of stigmatizing mental health \u2013 just because you have a mental health issue doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re violent,\u201d Walz said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001v3b6m94spneu6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The candidates also shared concerns over how schools were responding to the threat of active shooters. Again, though, Vance treated the issue as something more like a force of nature than a policy question.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqxz001w3b6mc310ljnq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI unfortunately think we have to increase security in our schools,\u201d he said, acknowledging that it was not a pleasant prospect. \u201cWe have to make the doors lock better. We have to make the doors stronger. We\u2019ve got to make the windows stronger.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1r9vqy0001x3b6me6v1vxcw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walz agreed, in part, but, in urging tighter restrictions, asked viewers, \u201cDo you want your schools hardened to look like a fort?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc91uw003h3b6mtpwroxcg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vance was put on the spot about how the \u201cconcepts of a plan\u201d that Trump claimed in the last debate he had to replace the Affordable Care Act would work \u2014 and whether he could guarantee Americans with pre-existing conditions wouldn\u2019t pay more for health care under Trump\u2019s plan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc91uw003i3b6m7lb2mi78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWell of course we\u2019re going to cover Americans with pre-existing conditions,\u201d Vance said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc91uw003j3b6mffksth9b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Trump has never articulated how he would change the Affordable Care Act\u2019s key provisions, including requiring insurance companies to cover those with pre-existing conditions and allowing children to remain on their parents\u2019 insurance until age 26.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc91uw003k3b6m78z8l6tk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Vance declined to detail any parts of Trump\u2019s plan, saying he is \u201cnot going to propose a 900-page bill standing on a debate stage. It would bore everybody to tears.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc91uw003l3b6ms5nn6xwt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd it wouldn\u2019t actually mean anything, because part of this is the give-and-take of bipartisan negotiation,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc91uw003m3b6m5obdim33@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walz pounced, highlighting Trump\u2019s 2016 pledge to undo former President Barack Obama\u2019s signature law \u2014 an effort Walz noted would have been successful had the late Sen. John McCain not cast the deciding vote against a repeal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rc91uw003n3b6mtjdpqsuy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGo back and remember this: He ran on \u2014 the first thing he was going to do on day one, was repeal Obamacare,\u201d Walz said. \u201cWhat that means to you is, you lose your pre-existing conditions. If you\u2019re sitting at home and you\u2019ve got asthma? Too bad. If you\u2019re a woman? Probably not. Broke your foot during football? Might kick you out.
