He was 84.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His publicist, Belinda Foster, confirmed the death on Tuesday, saying he had died on Aug. 21. She did not specify the cause or say why the announcement of his death was delayed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Amos\u2019s acting career spanned more than five decades, with his breakthrough coming in 1970 on the CBS comedy \u201cThe Mary Tyler Moore Show,\u201d playing Gordy, the weatherman on a local television news program working alongside Ms. Moore\u2019s Mary Richards, an associate producer. After three seasons, Mr. Amos left for \u201cGood Times,\u201d a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/06\/arts\/television\/norman-lear-dead.html\" title=\"\">Norman Lear<\/a> production and a spinoff of the producer\u2019s sitcom \u201cMaude.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Chronicling the trials and tribulations of a Black working-class family living in the Chicago projects, \u201cGood Times,\u201d which ran from 1974-79, also on CBS, never shied away from the gritty realities of life in public housing, touching on topics like racial bigotry, drug abuse and poverty \u2014 but all with a sense of humor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Amos played James Evans Sr., a fierce disciplinarian with a tender heart who took on odd jobs to support his wife, Florida Evans (<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1998\/11\/19\/arts\/esther-rolle-78-who-played-feisty-maid-and-matriarch.html\" title=\"\">Esther Rolle<\/a>), his sons Michael (Ralph Carter) and J.J.
