The annular phase of the eclipse will first be visible from Earth at 12:50 p.m. EDT (1650 GMT); however, the best time to watch livestreams will be from 3:03 to 3:09 p.m. EDT (1903 to 1909 GMT), when the ring of fire will be seen for up to 6 minutes and 11 seconds from Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>During a solar eclipse, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\">the moon<\/a> passes between <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\">the sun<\/a> and Earth, casting a shadow upon our planet. The moon&#8217;s orbit around Earth is slightly elliptical: Sometimes it&#8217;s farther from Earth, and sometimes it&#8217;s closer. During an annular or &#8220;ring of fire&#8221; eclipse, the moon is relatively far from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\"><u>Earth<\/u><\/a> and does not fully cover the sun&#8217;s disk like we see during a total <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\"><u>solar eclipse<\/u><\/a><u>.<\/u> Instead, it leaves a distinct ring of light in the sky \u2014 the &#8220;ring of fire.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2024-october-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2024-october-2\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>TimeandDate<\/u><\/a><u>,<\/u> only about 175,000 people live within the path of annularity for today&#8217;s eclipse \u2014 a route between 165 and 206 miles (265 to 331 kilometers) wide. You&#8217;ll need to use solar filters to safely view this eclipse; whether you&#8217;re going to see the &#8220;ring of fire&#8221; or a partial solar eclipse, the dangers are the same. Observers will need to wear solar eclipse glasses, and cameras, telescopes and binoculars must have solar filters placed in front of their lenses at all times.
