Tim Walz said his teenage son had witnessed a shooting at a recreation center near his high school while playing volleyball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Walz, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, made the statement at the debate on Tuesday while answering a question about gun violence, saying the episode affected him: \u201cThose things don\u2019t leave you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Harris campaign said Mr. Walz was referring to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2023\/01\/18\/st-paul-shooting-leaves-teen-with-life-threatening-wound\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a shooting in January of last year<\/a>, when a 26-year-old employee of at the Jimmy Lee Recreation Center shot a teenager. The center is across the street from Central High School in St. Paul, where Mr. Walz\u2019s son, Gus Walz, is a student and plays volleyball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The story caught many by surprise, including Senator JD Vance of Ohio, Mr. Walz\u2019s Republican opponent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTim, first of all, I didn\u2019t know that your 17-year-old witnessed a shooting,\u201d Mr. Vance said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m sorry about that and I just want to say, Christ have mercy.
