While the respiratory virus season tends to peak between December and March, getting vaccinated in the fall can help provide protection throughout the season.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w00063b6mb2as77o9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It takes about two weeks for the body to build up a complete immune response after vaccination, but the protective benefits can last for months, said Janet Hamilton, executive director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w00073b6mjqv7c247@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Covid-19 is already circulating at high levels in the US, and flu won\u2019t be far behind.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w00083b6mtgiiytcy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re still trying to understand exactly what our new normal respiratory disease seasons are going to look like, but we are already seeing a lot of respiratory disease activity in a lot of places across the country,\u201d Hamilton said. \u201cI would really encourage folks to get vaccinated as soon as possible.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w00093b6m5s5vx4pj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Forecasts from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cfa-qualitative-assessments\/php\/data-research\/season-outlook24-25\/index.html#cdc_data_surveillance_section_7-key-uncertainties-methods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggest<\/a>\u00a0that this respiratory disease season will be similar to last year\u2019s \u2014 which brought more than 20 hospitalizations for every 100,000 people in one week at its peak \u2014 and far worse than in pre-pandemic years. At least 200 children died from flu during the 2023-24 season, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluview\/surveillance\/2024-week-38.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a>, more than any other year on record \u2014 and most were unvaccinated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000a3b6mo81dqamr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s a chance that the burden of disease could be lower, however, and vaccination rates will be a key factor in that trajectory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000b3b6m5m51457b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe fall respiratory disease vaccines really are a game changer,\u201d Hamilton said. \u201cThey are amazing at limiting severe infections, keeping you out of the hospital, as well as helping the time that you\u2019re sick or away from work as short as possible.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000c3b6mc5b4rcjq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what to know about the vaccines available to protect yourself this season.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000e3b6mgkp8p99i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older receive a Covid-19 vaccine this season to stay up to date. The virus is continuously evolving, and newer versions of the vaccine could offer better protection against severe disease by targeting newer variants.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000f3b6mmq342o0m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are multiple options available;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/22\/health\/updated-covid-19-vaccines-fda\/index.html\">mRNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer\u00a0<\/a>were updated to target KP.2, one of the so-called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/23\/health\/kp2-covid-flirt-variant-wellness\/index.html\">FLiRT variants<\/a>\u00a0that have been dominant in the US since May. Those vaccines are for people 6 months and older. A more traditional\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/30\/health\/novavax-covid-shot-fda\/index.html\">protein vaccine from Novavax<\/a>\u00a0is also available, but it targets JN.1, a variant that is still circulating but less prominently than a few months ago. The Novavax vaccine is approved only for those ages 12 and up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000g3b6mypgwzcrn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            We don\u2019t know how effective these vaccines will be in practice. But the Covid-19 vaccines provided 54% protection against symptomatic infection last season, CDC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7304a2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a>\u00a0shows, despite new variants that cropped up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000i3b6mqduf57k2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC also recommends a seasonal flu vaccine for everyone ages 6 months and older.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000j3b6mxd0l6xr9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most people need only one dose of flu vaccine each year. But some children who are getting a flu vaccine for the first time should get two doses, spaced four weeks apart.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000k3b6meol65k05@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A higher-dose formulation of the flu vaccine is also available for those 65 and older.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4w000m3b6m7pqkcooe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            RSV can be especially dangerous for older adults, as well as infants and young children. Vaccines are available to protect both groups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000n3b6mt4bg1wig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC updated its recommendations for older adults this year with clearer guidance. All adults 75 and older should get a single RSV shot, along with those 60 and older who are at increased risk from certain chronic medical conditions such as lung or heart disease or because they live in a nursing home or long-term care facility.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000o3b6mr9pb63dn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike the flu and Covid-19 vaccines, the RSV vaccine is one-time dose. Older adults who received an RSV vaccine last year when they first became available do not need to get another one this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000p3b6mr5umwglm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pregnant women can receive an RSV vaccine that will protect a newborn, or antibodies can be given to an infant after birth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000r3b6md03cv6qo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s safe to get both a Covid-19 and flu vaccine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/coadministration.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the same time<\/a>, according to the CDC, and it may be more convenient, rather than putting one shot off and getting sick in the meantime. If you\u2019re getting more than one shot at a time, it can be in the same arm, at least one inch apart, or in different arms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000s3b6mnantwt49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC says it\u2019s also acceptable to get Covid-19, flu and RSV shots at one time, for those who are eligible. There\u2019s no recommended wait time between them. However, the agency says, \u201cpeople who get an RSV vaccine and a flu vaccine at the same visit might be more likely to have injection-site reactions or other common side effects after vaccination. Additional research is occurring to understand this better.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000t3b6mmtzekcem@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There isn\u2019t a combination vaccine available so far but it might not be too far off \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/investors.modernatx.com\/news\/news-details\/2024\/Moderna-RD-Day-Highlights-Progress-and-Strategic-Priorities\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moderna<\/a>\u00a0recently said it plans to file in 2024 for regulatory approval for a combination Covid-19-flu vaccine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000v3b6m4vpg7fri@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Covid-19, flu and RSV vaccines are widely available at pharmacies across the US. The federal government has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vaccine locator<\/a>\u00a0to help find available doses but notes that appointments and availability should be confirmed directly with the provider.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000w3b6m535oxnql@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vaccines may also be available from local health departments or physicians\u2019 offices, but probably not as readily.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000x3b6m8m66yp00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For children and young infants, parents should check with their pediatrician. However, multiple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/03\/health\/pediatric-covid-vaccines-rollout\/index.html\">challenges<\/a>\u00a0from last year \u2014 including age cutoffs at pharmacies and limited stock at pediatricians\u2019 offices \u2014 may persist this season.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x000z3b6mxq0ruajj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These vaccines are covered by most insurance plans. For adults without insurance or those whose insurance does not cover the vaccine, getting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvs.com\/immunizations\/covid-19-vaccine#:~:text=How%20much%20is%20the%20COVID,charged%20%24201.99%20for%20the%20vaccination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated Covid-19 shot at a pharmacy could cost $201.99<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1rqyw4x00113b6mroo2d20z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Free shots may still be available for people without insurance in some places.
