It\u2019s a noisy, fast-paced job that for Mr. Cohen, a self-described \u201cstress smoker,\u201d has made it harder to quit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019ve tried gum, patches, snacks,\u201d Mr. Cohen, 35, said, taking a drag. \u201cIt\u2019s not hard to stop \u2014 it\u2019s hard to stay stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cigarettes are notoriously difficult to kick: Even after one year of abstinence, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3723776\/#:~:text=After%20one%20full%20year%20of,after%2030%20years%20of%20abstinence.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">about half of smokers light up again<\/a>. Most people fail to quit cold turkey. Other approaches, including prescription medications and the nicotine gums and patches that Mr. Cohen tried, come with side effects or don\u2019t satisfy cravings. A recent scientific review identified a little-known plant-based compound <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39231467\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">called cytisine<\/a> as one of the more effective options. But while a pill version is used around the world to help people stop smoking, it is not available in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There is now a small biotech company running clinical trials in the United States in hopes of bringing it to a broader market. If it were approved, cytisine would become the first smoking cessation drug since 2006. While smoking rates<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>have plummeted, tobacco use still causes <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/public-health-education\/health-effects-tobacco-use#:~:text=Tobacco%20use%20has%20serious%20effects,than%20480%2C000%20deaths%20each%20year.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">nearly half a million deaths<\/a> nationwide each year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cRelapse rates are just so high, and we have evidence that cytisine helps,\u201d said Jonathan Livingstone-Banks, a tobacco researcher at the University of Oxford and the lead author of the recent review.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2c6907e0\">The potential for cytisine<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cytisine is found in the laburnum tree.<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>During World War II, soldiers used the tree\u2019s leaves as a tobacco substitute. The drug was later developed as a pill in Bulgaria in 1964. While cytisine has been used to treat <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S104366182100284X\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">nicotine addiction in Eastern Europe<\/a> for decades, it\u2019s only more recently that the compound has been considered for smoking cessation in the rest of the world.
