But to be fair, it\u2019s been 400 years since a certain Englishman wrote the play in which she\u2019s making her Broadway debut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn Oct. 24, following a month of previews, Zegler will take the stage as Juliet in director Sam Gold\u2019s revival of Shakespeare\u2019s best-known romance. Gold\u2019s vision leans heavily into the culture of its Gen Z cast: Zegler says he originally pitched the project to her as \u201c\u2018Romeo and Juliet\u2019 if it was set in Troye Sivan\u2019s \u2018Rush\u2019 music video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tZegler offers her own take. \u201cJuliet would be having a brat girl summer,\u201d she says, joking that, like Charli XCX and Lorde, the Montagues and Capulets will \u201cwork it out in the revival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDespite that 21st-century edge \u2014 and new music from pop super-producer Jack Antonoff \u2014 Gold is sticking to the original text. \u201cIt\u2019s 100% iambic pentameter,\u201d Zegler says. \u201cThis is Shakespeare, and you\u2019re sitting your ass down for the play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince being plucked from her life as a high schooler in Hackensack, N.J., and handpicked by\u00a0Steven Spielberg to play Maria in his 2021 remake of \u201cWest Side Story,\u201d Zegler has become one of the decade\u2019s shiniest new stars. She\u2019s appeared in comic book adventures (\u201cShazam! Fury of the Gods\u201d) and headlined a major franchise (\u201cThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds &amp; Snakes\u201d). Now Zegler is about to become an icon for kids the world over, playing the title role in Disney\u2019s live-action \u201cSnow White,\u201d which opens in theaters in March 2025. In some ways, playing the fairest of them all marks the end of an era for Zegler, while heading to Broadway marks the beginning of a new one: \u201cI need to start thinking about the pivot,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel capable of being picky for the next thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut Zegler\u2019s meteoric rise has come with strings attached. For as long as she\u2019s been famous, she\u2019s been the subject of ruthless and relentless criticism. It began innocently enough, with petty jokes about her \u201ctheater kid energy,\u201d but as Zegler\u2019s fame increased, the complaints against her grew more sinister. When she playfully posted about not being invited to the 2022 Oscars despite \u201cWest Side Story\u201d earning seven nominations, she was called ungrateful and entitled. For admitting that she took the role in the \u201cShazam!\u201d sequel because she needed the money, she was seen as tacky and in need of media training. And every time she speaks up about racism and sexism in the entertainment industry, she\u2019s slammed as just another \u201cDEI hire,\u201d coasting on her identity rather than her talent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe\u2019s trying to have a sense of humor about the vitriol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSomeone should kill you,\u201d an X user wrote in August. \u201cFun fact i will be dying eight times a week on broadway this fall!!!!,\u201d she replied, telling the hater to buy a ticket \u2014 then tagging the FBI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBeing famous isn\u2019t for the faint of heart,\u201d Zegler says with a sigh.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"separator larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-tb-00 lrv-u-border-b-1 lrv-u-border-color-grey-light  \"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen Zegler comes downstairs from her West Hollywood hotel room for breakfast, she\u2019s wearing a floral maxi dress, her hair pulled up with an oversized claw clip to show off a pair of gold hoop earrings. It\u2019s a sunny Saturday in August, and there\u2019s no makeup on her face. The look is effortless, classic cool girl, and she blends in well with the clientele brunching at tables nearby. But these are not her people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe reason I fell in love with this industry is not because of this town,\u201d she says, lowering her voice to evade the ears of the locals. \u201cIn fact, I kind of can\u2019t stand this town. I don\u2019t like that there\u2019s a town built around the industry that I work in; it\u2019s stifling and isolating and weird. If I go out and I\u2019m like, \u2018Is this too fancy?,\u2019 someone is definitely dressed more ridiculous than me, in the best way,\u201d she says. She\u2019s wearing a curious accessory of her own today: a \u201cSesame Street\u201d fanny pack slung over one shoulder. It\u2019s a nod to her ultimate career goal of becoming the sole human actor in a Muppets production. \u201cMichael Caine did it for \u2018Christmas Carol,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cTim Curry did it for \u2018Muppet Treasure Island.\u2019 I want to be the one!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat will have to wait though. For now, Zegler\u2019s in her princess era. It\u2019s been\u00a0a mixed bag. Her appointment as the apple-eating stepdaughter of the evil queen drew instant ire online, with many promising to boycott the film due to the \u201cwoke\u201d casting. To them, the actress\u2019s Colombian heritage disqualified her from playing the princess from Disney\u2019s 1937 musical fantasy, described as having hair as black as ebony and skin as white as snow. Never mind the fact that the character Blancanieves is just as popular in Spanish-speaking countries as she is in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cShe was my mom\u2019s favorite princess,\u201d Zegler says. \u201cWhen she was growing up, there weren\u2019t a lot of dark-haired princesses, and that was the one she could relate to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s no surprise that \u201cSnow White\u201d director Marc Webb wanted Zegler for the role from the moment she read for the part. He says his script supervisor \u201cwept\u201d upon hearing her singing voice. \u201cBut she also has an inherent grace, poise and goodness that reminds me so much of what is essential to Snow White,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo Zegler doesn\u2019t bother trying to understand why it\u2019s so hard for some of those die-hard \u201cDisney adults\u201d to picture a Latina in their beloved princess\u2019s shoes. She\u2019s making a children\u2019s movie after all, and she remembers spending her own childhood obsessing over ABC\u2019s 1997 TV movie that starred Whitney Houston as the fairy godmother alongside an 18-year-old Brandy as Cinderella.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI grew up in a house where that was Cinderella. Obviously, we watched the cartoon. But a child\u2019s mind is the most amazing thing, where it\u2019s just like, \u2018OK, that\u2019s Cinderella,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cBut the blond-haired, blue-eyed, blue-dress Cinderella from the 1950s cartoon is also Cinderella. Also, Hilary Duff is Cinderella in \u2018A Cinderella Story.\u2019\u201d She smirks. \u201cI was able to comprehend those things at a young age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI know Rachel will be absolutely incredible in this role,\u201d Brandy says in an email, 26 years after her star turn in \u201cCinderella.\u201d She\u2019s also got some advice for Zegler as she faces the barrage of negativity over her casting. \u201cYou\u2019re not taking on this role to fit the mold of the critics,\u201d she writes. \u201cYou\u2019re doing this for every little Colombian girl who has yet to see themselves in a role like a Disney princess. You\u2019re doing this for the little girl that you once were, who grew up without that representation of her Colombian culture. You are showing her that anything is possible for someone who looks like her, and that is the most important job in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs for that line about \u201cskin as white as snow,\u201d Zegler reveals that the new film has its own origin story for her name. \u201cIt fell back to another version of \u2018Snow White\u2019 that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd so the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One of the core points in our film for any young woman or young person is remembering how strong you actually are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe social media outrage about Zegler being cast as Snow White only got louder as time went on. She began saying in red-carpet interviews in the summer of 2022 that her version of the iconic princess wouldn\u2019t spend her days pining over a man. She called aspects of the original story \u201cweird\u201d and said that the 1937 film\u2019s prince \u201cliterally stalks\u201d Snow White. But I also believe that they can do everything,\u201d Zegler says. What she\u2019d meant to convey was that Snow White wants romance but has other goals too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI would never want to box someone in and say, \u2018If you want love, then you can\u2019t work.\u2019 Or \u2018If you want to work, then you can\u2019t have a family.\u2019 It\u2019s not true. It\u2019s never been true. It can be very upsetting when things get taken out of context or jokes don\u2019t land,\u201d Zegler says. \u201cThe love story is very integral. A lot of people wrote that we weren\u2019t doing [that storyline] anymore \u2014 we were always doing that; it just wasn\u2019t what we were talking about on that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tZegler\u2019s not surprised by what she sees as people\u2019s willful misunderstanding of her comments. It\u2019s par for the course for an outspoken young woman in the public eye. \u201cI\u2019ve watched women get torn down my whole life, my whole career,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ll watch it in the election that\u2019s upcoming. We\u2019re gonna witness that for a long time, I fear. Sometimes it can feel like we\u2019re going back; it certainly felt that way when that was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tZegler isn\u2019t immune to the harsh criticism, even if her bubbly demeanor makes her seem that way. Though she\u2019s been tempted to stay off social media, she won\u2019t. \u201cI don\u2019t like to give them the satisfaction of knowing they hurt me in the moment,\u201d she says. \u201cYou give them a lot of power by taking a social media break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLogging off would also make it harder to speak up for the causes she cares about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, Zegler championed protections against the potential dangers of artificial intelligence \u2014 a threat that felt personal: She\u2019d already had something like \u201c465 photos taken of every corner of my body\u201d for use in CG stunts. \u201cIt was fucking dystopian,\u201d she says. \u201cI was really scared of being replaced by an artificial intelligence version of myself that they scanned when I was 18 and then never being able to work on a set again. What was stopping them from using that for the rest of my life?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOver the past year, Zegler has also been an advocate for Palestinians, and as expected, her comments have been put under a microscope. Just one day after appearing at D23 in August, where Zegler teed up the first footage from \u201cSnow White\u201d for a crowd of adoring fans, she posted a note of gratitude on X. But it was the last line of her post that drew the most attention: \u201cAnd always remember, free palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cRachel Zegler Stirs More Controversy,\u201d read a Fox News headline. Newsweek\u00a0wrote that Zegler was on a \u201ccollison course\u201d with her co-star Gal Gadot, who had served two years as a soldier in the Israel Defense Forces before making it as an actress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI can\u2019t watch children die,\u201d Zegler says. \u201cI don\u2019t think that should be a hot take.\u201d She knows that it\u2019s not that simple, but she tries to tune out all the noise that blares around her every time she speaks out. \u201cI\u2019m only responsible for what I feel. And then I\u2019m also responsible for how I act upon it,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re nearing one year since the horrendous attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, but I\u2019ve been following this conflict for so many years. Like so many people, I\u2019m so heartbroken by the loss of life that we\u2019re seeing with these insane death tolls coming out of both regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDespite the blowback, Zegler wants to continue to use her platform to advocate for the Palestinian people. \u201cI don\u2019t have the answers,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t think any celebrity making a political statement has the answers. But we have the platform to share a donation link to make sure that these people get the money, the care and the aid that they need that people in power aren\u2019t giving them. And in \u201cThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds &amp; Snakes,\u201d though Lucy Gray Baird is a romantic lead with a beautiful voice, the character fights for her life with an attitude Zegler describes as \u201ciron-fisted\u201d and \u201ca little bit terrifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEven though she\u2019s still in the early years of her career, Zegler has tried to fight against being typecast. \u201cI feel like nobody wanted me to do anything different,\u201d she says. \u201cEven the Broadway offers I was getting were like, \u2018Do you want to be Guenevere in \u201cCamelot\u201d\u2019? There\u2019s a lot of interest there, but it would be another soprano, the thing that everybody\u2019s already seen me do. It would have been an honor, but I need to think about the longevity of a career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tZegler says she \u201clocked into\u201d the character of Juliet for the first time after Gold instructed her to \u201ckeep it in mind that 13-year-olds are way older than they used to be.\u201d She says, \u201cThat was life-changing for me to hear.
