Despite the fact that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/hunger-games-ballad-of-songbirds-and-snakes-review-1851001265\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ballad of Songbirds &amp; Snakes<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actor looks and sings like a literal Disney princess, grown adults were upset that a Latina woman had been cast as their beloved white cartoon idol. (Halle Bailey faced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/rachel-zegler-halle-bailey-notes-on-online-harassment-1851081523\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similarly vile comments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when she was cast as Ariel in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Little Mermaid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019.) People were pissed off again when the young star said her take on the classic story would not include the \u201cweird\u201d element of Snow White pining over a man who \u201cliterally stalks\u201d her, interpreting her words in the least generous way to mean that she looks down on people who value love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zegler addressed all of this backlash in a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/rachel-zegler-snow-white-backlash-romeo-and-juliet-gaza-1236160365\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Variety<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cover story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a sentiment we\u2019ve heard too many times recently from other young women (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/chappell-roan-profile-read-this\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chappell Roan<\/span><\/a>)<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who just can\u2019t seem to catch a break: \u201cBeing famous isn\u2019t for the faint of heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- inlinecontent_1 --> <!-- admarker --> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the critics who thought she saw Snow White as lesser because she longed to fall in love, Zegler reflected that \u201cit made me sad that it was taken in such a way, because I believe that women can do anything. But I also believe that they can do everything.\u201d Specifically, she \u201cwould never want to box someone in and say, \u2018If you want love, then you can\u2019t work.\u2019 Or \u2018If you want to work, then you can\u2019t have a family.\u2019 It\u2019s not true\u2026 It can be very upsetting when things get taken out of context or jokes don\u2019t land.\u201d She also promises that the love story is \u201cvery integral\u201d to the film and is absolutely still happening. \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t what we were talking about on that day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the controversy surrounding the color of her skin, Zegler is (justly) more snide. Speaking about the 1997 version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinderella <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starring Brandy as the titular princess, Zegler said, \u201c\u200b\u200bI grew up in a house where that was Cinderella. Obviously, we watched the cartoon. But a child\u2019s mind is the most amazing thing, where it\u2019s just like, \u2018OK, that\u2019s Cinderella.\u2019 But the blond-haired, blue-eyed, blue-dress Cinderella from the 1950s cartoon is also Cinderella.
