If it\u2019s flattering, is it honest? If it\u2019s honest, why bother?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Those questions, both as artistic choices and as problems of social identity, are powerfully and hilariously engaged in the revival of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roundabouttheatre.org\/get-tickets\/2024-2025\/yellow-face\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">David Henry Hwang\u2019s \u201cYellow Face\u201d<\/a> that opened on Tuesday at the Todd Haimes Theater. The answers are deliberately equivocal. On one hand, this Roundabout production, directed (as was the 2007 original) by Leigh Silverman, stars the exceedingly likable and handsome Daniel Dae Kim as Hwang\u2019s stand-in, called DHH. On the other, this DHH is a worm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So too is the sinuous story, which requires a ton of exposition to get on its way. DHH, exactly like Hwang, won a 1988 Tony Award for his Broadway debut, \u201cM. Butterfly.\u201d His 1993 follow-up, \u201cFace Value,\u201d won only notoriety. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/01\/theater\/face-value-david-henry-hwang-broadway.html\" title=\"\">Closing before its official New York opening,<\/a> it earned the nickname \u201cM. Turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFace Value\u201d was Hwang\u2019s theatrical response to the \u201cMiss Saigon\u201d controversy, in which the producer Cameron Mackintosh, importing that megamusical from London in 1991, sought to import its star, Jonathan Pryce, as well. But because Pryce is white, and his character is Eurasian, protests against the casting ensued.
