data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            How that message will be received by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains to be seen, particularly as his political standing <a Biden has watched with mounting concern as tensions in the region have spiraled. Attempts at brokering ceasefire agreements both in Gaza and along the Israel-Lebanon border have been largely fruitless. And the pending American\u00a0presidential\u00a0election has elevated the stakes of trying to manage the crisis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000e3b6mvqag6znz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The scale of Tuesday\u2019s attack far outstripped the\u00a0shower of projectiles Iran fired toward Israel in April. Israel and the United States were again successful in thwarting the missiles, in part due to a\u00a0monthslong\u00a0effort at coordinating a response. But the scale of the attack, which Biden called \u201cbrazen\u201d in the hours after it happened, led American officials to conclude that a response from Israel was warranted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000f3b6m8nfiugmo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIsrael has a right to respond. It should be a proportional response,\u201d Biden told reporters Wednesday following a virtual call with leaders from the Group of 7 industrialized nations. He said the leaders were in agreement on that point and were preparing to slap new sanctions on Iran.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000g3b6mn5p5upvk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That is a different tone than mid-April, when US officials encouraged Israel to recognize that Iran had inflicted limited damage and urged them move on. Israel did respond against Iran, but in a limited way, striking an air defense system in Isfahan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000h3b6moui9c7z0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, a bigger Israeli counterattack is expected that could include a range of targets. The administration currently assesses it\u2019s unlikely Israel would target Iran\u2019s nuclear sites, though one senior official said Israel still hasn\u2019t decided on where it might strike.\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1s9k0fw001d3b6mtnnkk8f2@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"taking-a-beat-and-thinking-about-it\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        \u2018Taking a beat and thinking about it\u2019<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000i3b6miu6cmqt5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey are doing the smart thing and taking a beat and thinking about it,\u201d the official said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000j3b6mscb5k9n3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Biden said Wednesday he does not support an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. \u201cThe answer is no,\u201d he responded when questioned about the prospect of Israel launching a retaliatory strike on sites related to Iran\u2019s nuclear program.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000k3b6mg7t8w80n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Such a decision by Israel would almost certainly trigger the out-of-control conflict Biden has been working to prevent in the year since Hamas launched its attack on Israel on October 7. For Netanyahu and some his most hawkish advisers, however, it could eliminate what is viewed as an existential threat to Israel once and for all.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000l3b6mz5c44tg9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the aftermath of this week\u2019s attacks, the US is closely monitoring any activity surrounding Iran\u2019s nuclear program, but they have not seen any recent changes, two US officials said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000m3b6mqk0bv6ss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A central\u00a0US\u00a0concern is the possibility of Iran turning to bolster its nuclear program after Israel successfully degraded its proxies in Lebanon and Gaza and foiled its ballistic missile\u00a0attack.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000n3b6muwiwmekh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While there are no signals currently that Iran will do that, or is planning to, US officials are still monitoring for the possibility of such a move.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000o3b6msgz2k633@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There has not been a dramatic shift in Iran\u2019s nuclear posture recently, though over the last year Iran has further produced fissile material for its nuclear program. Earlier this year Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Iran\u2019s breakout time \u2013 the amount of time needed to produce enough nuclear material for a nuclear weapon \u2013 \u201cis now probably one or two weeks.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000p3b6m6qlvh46t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No Israelis were hurt or killed in Tuesday\u2019s Iranian attack, which appeared to target military and intelligence facilities. One Palestinian man was killed in the West Bank by\u00a0falling\u00a0shrapnel from an interceptor missile launched by Israel, according to the hospital where he was treated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000q3b6m59jc7vt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With the\u00a0two-day Jewish new year holiday Rosh Hashanah starting on Wednesday, there is some expectation an Israeli reprisal could still be days away.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000r3b6m9s4yod9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey have the holiday so that buys time and space,\u201d one of the senior US officials said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000s3b6me7cm0rgk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet waiting days for a response also has the effect of prolonging anticipation in a region already on a razor\u2019s edge,\u00a0especially as Israel\u2019s operation against Hezbollah continues. CNN reported Wednesday that US officials and Israeli\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/israel-iran-missile-attack-middle-east-10-02-24-intl-hnk#cm1s50n7600003b6r5lwi70pu\">believe about 50% of the Iranian proxy group\u2019s arsenal<\/a>\u00a0has been destroyed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000t3b6mhhic53cz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inside the White House, there is acute recognition that how the next weeks play out will have some effect on the presidential election. There is little Vice President Kamala Harris \u2014 the Democratic nominee \u2014 wants less than a full-scale regional war that her opponent can use to accuse the Biden administration of incompetence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s90li6000u3b6mvd5g6633@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A close observer of American politics, Netanyahu is similarly aware of how Israel\u2019s actions in the coming weeks could impact the race.
