That one peaked on Tuesday (Oct. 1) at 6:20 p.m. EDT (2220 GMT).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/spaceweather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/spaceweather.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Spaceweather.com<\/u><\/a>, this flare was one of the most significant of the current Solar Cycle 25, ranking as the second-biggest behind the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-solar-flare-sunspot-ar3664-x88-class-may-14-2024#:~:text=A%20monster%20sunspot%20on%20the%20sun's%20surface%20just%20won't%20quit,\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-solar-flare-sunspot-ar3664-x88-class-may-14-2024#:~:text=A%20monster%20sunspot%20on%20the%20sun's%20surface%20just%20won't%20quit,\"><u>massive X8.7 flare on May 14<\/u><\/a>. (Activity of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\"><u>the sun<\/u><\/a> waxes and wanes on an 11-year cycle.) A partial or complete loss of high frequency (HF) radio signals likely resulted from the outburst in sunlit parts of Earth. The CME was Earth-directed and is expected to hit our planet on Friday (Oct. 4), likely spawning a strong geomagnetic storm that could supercharge <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\"><u>aurora<\/u><\/a> displays.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>When these storms occur, Earth&#8217;s magnetic field undergoes a shakeup that can affect not only auroras but also navigation systems, power grids and even satellite communications. The more powerful the storm, the higher <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation#:~:text=The%20scales%20describe%20the%20environmental%20disturbances%20for%20three%20event%20types:\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation#:~:text=The%20scales%20describe%20the%20environmental%20disturbances%20for%20three%20event%20types:\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>the number on the geomagnetic storm scale<\/u><\/a>, and the more dramatic the effects will be. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&#8217;s flare erupted from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\"><u>sunspot<\/u><\/a> AR3842. On Monday (Sept. 30), the same sunspot blasted off a M7.6 flare. M-class flares are the second strongest to X, which are 10 times more powerful.
