The probe is currently soaring through space some 13 billion miles (20.9 billion kilometers) from Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s4q3uh00063b6mkfrlpqjx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mission engineers sent a command to shutter the Voyager 2\u2019s Plasma Science, or PLS, experiment \u2014 which was used to observe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/07\/world\/parker-solar-probe-solar-wind-scn\/index.html\">solar winds<\/a> \u2014 on September 26 using the Deep Space Network, a series of massive radio antennae that can beam information billions of miles through space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s4q3uh00073b6mhuinq3f4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It took 19 hours for the message to reach Voyager 2, and a return signal was received 19 hours later, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/voyager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA said<\/a> Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s4q3uh00083b6mmf1ady27@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the aging probe\u2019s emptying power stores, NASA expects that Voyager 2 will keep operating with at least one science instrument into the 2030s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s4q3uh00093b6m3qk3jitn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US space agency has routinely had to carry out commands to shut off various science instruments over the years as the 47-year-old spacecraft drains its supply of plutonium. Voyager 2 has three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia25782-voyagers-rtg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">radioisotope thermoelectric generators<\/a> that power the spacecraft by converting heat emitted by the decaying plutonium into electricity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s4q3uh000a3b6mo5hv3gm3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But turning off a piece of equipment on Voyager 2 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/18\/science\/voyager-1-science-data-resumes-scn\/index.html\">Voyager 1<\/a> \u2014 an identical spacecraft launched 16 days after its twin \u2014 is not ideal, NASA noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s4q3uh000b3b6m3kg37wrm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMission engineers have taken steps to avoid turning off a science instrument for as long as possible because the science data collected by the twin Voyager probes is unique,\u201d the space agency said in a statement. \u201cNo other human-made spacecraft has operated in interstellar space, the region outside the heliosphere.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1s4q3uh000c3b6md60l5lbc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The plasma experiment consisted of a set of four \u201ccups,\u201d or plasma detectors, which can gather information about the stream of ions and electrons spewed from the sun across the solar system, otherwise called solar winds.
